Extra 3 is a political satirical magazine of the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR). It is currently presented in several seasons 18 times on Thursdays on the first , otherwise weekly on Wednesdays on NDR television .

history

The show was founded by the then NDR editor-in-chief Peter Merseburger and his deputy Dieter Kronzucker . The satirical magazine was then further developed by Rudolf Lauschke and Gerhard Quack . The first broadcast took place on Tuesday, September 21, 1976 in the NDR regional program. This was followed by changing slots: in 1988, for example, every Friday from 8:15 p.m., in the 1990s on Fridays at 8:45 p.m., later and in the 2000s on Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. respectively. At the end of the 2000s, the program switched to Sunday evening at 10:45 p.m. and has been running on Wednesday evening at 10:50 p.m. since June 8, 2011. On October 9, 2014, extra 3 was broadcast for the first time on Das Erste , where it has since been shown seasonally on Thursday at 10:45 p.m. alternating with other satirical formats.

In 2018, spending on NDR television had an average of 244,000 viewers with a market share of 7.1 percent (NDR broadcasting area, viewers aged 3 and over). The editions in the first had an average of 1.8 million viewers in 2018 with a market share of 10.4 percent (nationwide, viewers aged 3 and over).

For comparison: In 1997, the ratings for programs on NDR television averaged 180,000 viewers, which meant a market share of 5.7 percent in the NDR broadcasting area (viewers aged 3 and over). The first broadcast on the first on Thursday, October 9, 2014, reached 1.43 million viewers nationwide and corresponded to a market share of 8.4 percent.

In addition to the number of viewers during the television broadcast, there are hundreds of thousands of views on the YouTube channel "extra 3" every week. Often the videos are also in the "YouTube trends".

Scandal over Erdoğan videos

In the broadcast on March 17, 2016, a song entitled Erdowie, Erdowo, Erdogan was broadcast. This satirically deals with the politics of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The text, underlaid with Erdoğan images, addresses the restriction of press freedom in Turkey , for example the shutdown of the Turkish television channel Bugün TV , human rights violations and the trial against critical journalists . On March 27, 2016, it became known that the German ambassador Martin Erdmann had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Ankara. Among other things, a request was made to prevent the further distribution of the video. According to the media, the ambassador had to justify the two-minute contribution. Thereupon the Foreign Office announced that Erdmann had made it clear in the conversation with Undersecretary Murat Esenli that "the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the protection of fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press and freedom of expression , are valuable assets that must be protected together." , as well as pointed out that political satire in Germany is covered by freedom of the press and freedom of expression “and therefore there is neither a need nor an opportunity for the Federal Government to act”.

NDR television editor-in-chief Andreas Cichowicz emphasized that the diplomatic action of the Turkish government based on an extra 3 contribution was not compatible with the broadcaster's understanding of freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

The editorial team then published another video version of the song with Turkish subtitles. Erdoğan was also named “Employee of the Month” on the show. As of May 2018, the original had almost 13 million views on the YouTube Internet platform .

In response to this scandal, Jan Böhmermann read the controversial poem Schmähkritik on March 31, 2016 , which was the basis for the Böhmermann affair .

On March 23, 2017, the extra 3 editorial team followed up on this topic, this time with the song Neuer Song for Erdogan (the Schnuckel-Mustache-Chef-Osman) . Again a song by Nena serves as a template, this time 99 balloons . The text, which is underlaid with pictures by Erdoğan, deals with the themes of the first song, his hatred of Kurds , criticism of foreign politicians and the expulsion of Turkish politicians from the Netherlands, and Turkish politicians are banned from appearing in the Netherlands and Germany .

Alice Weidel as a "Nazi bitch"

In her party conference speech in April 2017, the top candidate of the AfD, Alice Weidel , called for political correctness to be thrown on the rubbish heap of history . In an extra 3 broadcast, moderator Ehring expressed his approval with the words: “ Yeah. No more political correctness, let's all be incorrect. The Nazi bitch is right. Was that incorrect enough? I hope! “Thereupon Weidel applied to the Hamburg regional court for an injunction, but it failed. The district court argued that it was "clearly recognizable" to be satire. Since Alice Weidel is in the “public eye”, she also has to accept “exaggerated criticism”, especially since the expression “refers to Weidel and her demand for the abolition of correctness ”. Weidel lodged a complaint with the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court , but withdrew it.

Broadcast content

When Dieter Kronzucker “invented” 3 extra in 1976, the absurdities of everyday political life were supposed to be dealt with, so the program inevitably became a pure satire magazine. Today, an extra 3 weekly highlights the political events in the form of satirical short articles and moderations / stand-ups. In addition to contributions in which current events are satirically presented or processed, there are also some fixed categories in the program.

Current sections

The extra 3 studio since 2014
  • Ticked off - the week from the point of view of the news: Short excerpts on current topics from various news programs are cut together and satirically commented on, Frank Gustavus is the regular speaker .
  • The real madness: This section is about bizarre, real incidents and events in Germany. Often these are public pranks around government building measures or antics from the authorities. Whole programs around this category are also occasionally broadcast as “extra 3 special: The real insanity XXL”, in which six contributions are presented in the form of a hit list.
  • Extra3 Extra: Janin Ullmann presents satirical news about certain current topics in the style of the Tagesschau in the extra 3 studio .
  • Statistics expert Klaas Butenschön presents fictional surveys with satirical questions in the extra 3 studio and presents their absurd possible answers.
  • Caroline Korneli is, like Tobias Schlegl, an outside reporter and takes an ironic look at current trends and events. The reporting satirizes the tone of current affliction journalism and ironically borrows from the narrative style of milieu studies and reports (Caro Korneli in the “Anonymous Liberals”; Apple , the sect - an attempt at conversion).
  • Petra Nadolny , Judith Richter , Holger Stockhaus , Cem-Ali Gültekin and other comedy actors appear in various skits.
  • Max Giermann appears in the extra 3-Studio in various roles, including Günter Wallraff , Thomas Roth (in the parody of the day “ Thomasthemen” ), Sigmar Gabriel , Martin Schulz , Jens Spahn , Donald Trump and Robert Habeck .
  • The eulogy of the week holds Oliver lime kiln regularly on the podium in the extra 3 studio on current political issues.
  • GroKo in the FuZo: the fictional members of the Bundestag Philipp Meyer-Degenhardt from the CDU and Ingo Wolski from the SPD argue constantly and are played by Nils Holst and Oliver Kleinfeld. In the pedestrian zone they meet real people who react accordingly to these quarrels of the grand coalition and thus comment on government policy.
  • The little man: extra 3 reporter Jakob Leube goes to the Bundestag, at party congresses or trade fairs and asks politicians oa supposedly naive to explain a certain topic (e.g. data retention) to him more precisely and thereby provokes unexpected answers.
  • Katja Kreml: Katja Garmasch elicits surprisingly honest answers from people in surveys on the street with her supposedly Russian background as a “Russian exchange reporter” that these “normal” reporters would not give.
"Johannes Schlueter"
  • Johannes Schlueter ( Jesko Friedrich and Dennis Kaupp ): this fictional character has a different profession in each contribution, which is presented and on which a current topic is satirically processed, e.g. B. Johannes Schlueter as Bush pilot in the head of the (then) American President George W. Bush, as supernanny of the politicians, as indignation industrialist, as election campaign advisor to the Union, as film director of the new "SPD blockbuster", as an employee of the Federal President and others. In 2009 the category was awarded the Grimme Prize .
  • extra 3 songs: Here rock and pop songs as well as hits like Born to Be Alive , Here comes Alex and My little green cactus are rewritten with current references. The authors are Dennis Kaupp and Jesko Friedrich (see section “Johannes Schlueter”).
  • extra 3 expert Heinz Strunk: The author and actor Heinz Strunk “explains” current social issues and brings surprising truths to light with supposed tips.
  • Torsten Sträter : He appears as a “vice-replacement press spokesman” for various parties, organizations and people and explains their behavior, which is worthy of criticism, with surprising facts.
  • The extra 3 family: Using the example of a fictitious family, current everyday phenomena and social trends are satirically targeted (e.g. language assistants, food madness or selfies ).
  • Advertisement: This is a fictional and ironic advertisement , mostly for a party, a company or even a person. There are often parallels to real advertising clips.
  • Party researcher Prof. Dr. Ute Rehbein: Kirstin Warnke explains as a boyish party researcher Prof. Dr. Ute Rehbein in conversation with presenter Christian Ehring current political issues.
  • Schlegl in action: Tobias Schlegl takes to the streets, to party conferences or trade fairs and confronts passers-by and politicians with “grotesque” situations (selling off nuclear waste, collecting signatures for “A heart for the SPD ” or for “homosexuals are completely normal people”) .
  • The show with the Klaus (aka "Ach- und Krachgeschichten"): Here are u. a. Current political issues in the style of the show with the mouse (“Laughing and factual stories”) explained satirically.
  • Sarah Bosetti : Sarah Bosetti reads “love letters” (often malicious and irrelevant hate letters) and comments / answers them, also in a mocking way.

Discontinued sections

extra-3 studio from June 2009 to the end of July 2011
  • The K-Team : (formerly "The Chancellor's Canteen"): Plastic dolls of the then government politicians Merkel , Westerwelle and Guttenberg say what their role models supposedly actually believe. They were animated using the stop-motion method.
  • The average German family : It consists of a father, mother and 1.3 (previously: 1.4) children. The father usually explains current political issues to the child, whereupon the child always finds a contradiction in them and does not understand politics.
  • Hot spots of our time : animated film series (2003–2006).
  • Dat goes voor in Stapelmoor : Three Frisians from Stapelmoor who talk about God and the world in the skat group in their local bar and only touch the very hot topics: Theo, the pragmatist, Horst, the thinker, and Alerich, the visionary. "Men who pick up a sheet of paper but don't put one in front of their mouths."
  • Die Puschel : Here the political events are presented from the perspective of two microphones (NDR or ARD and ZDF ) (from 2005, irregular).
  • Short films by Alexander Lehmann : extra 3-author Alexander Lehmann presentscynical tipsin his computer-animated short films, e.g. B. on the best methods to rehabilitate the German health system.
  • Hobbythek : Old films by Jean Pütz on current topics newly dubbed . It is always portrayed as if one could turn the political issue into a hobby (e.g. "How do I make myself an oil disaster?").
  • Airtime for minorities : A representative of a minority (e.g. Jews, disabled people) gives a satirical lecture.
  • Airtime for angry citizens : An angry citizen gives an ambiguous speech against satire, mostly played by Janin Ullmann ; Most often the fictional character “Peggy Nowak” is shown, a clichéd viewer of Germany's Next Top Model, sometimes with xenophobic sayings in funny contexts (e.g. seasons), comparable to Ehring's presentations on PEGIDA .
  • Postillon24 : Anne Rothäuser and Thieß Neubert from the NDR broadcast of the same name offer a fictitious news review instead of ticked off in individual long editions (before the broadcasts in the first).
  • Bodyguard : Armin Rohde appears as an overwhelmed bodyguard for changing politicians.
  • Classix : Interesting contributions from earlier years will be shown again in this section. These included contributions that were based on the Telekolleg broadcasts and bore the same name.
  • Walulis watches TV : clips from Walulis ' program are shown that satirically parody the topic of television.
  • NNN - Latest National News : These give a satirical review of current events in the right-wing extremist scene from the fictional point of view of Adolf Hitler (spoken by Robert Missler , who also regularly takes on acting roles) . Recordings from old Nazi propaganda films are also used. The recording of Hitler's speech, which is synchronized again and again, mostly comes from the film Triumph des Willens .
  • Stumpfi wants to know : The “reporter sock Stumpfi” asks politicians about current issues in the style of a children's program .
  • Recently in the Bundestag : Excerpts from Bundestag debates, news broadcasts and important events have been re-synchronized. Runs regularly in NDR broadcasts as the final section under the credits.
  • Jasmin : extra 3 reporter Jasmin Wenkemann , supposedly as a tabloid reporter, attended events and interviewed politicians about their politics and private issues. Since their questions were often asked provocatively, this did not always meet with approval. Many politicians did not answer their questions at all. Jasmin Wenkemann often asked questions against various politicians and played them off against each other, for example an interview with Claudia Roth about Jürgen Trittin's beard .

Current broadcast dates

extra 3 runs on Wednesday at 10:50 p.m. on NDR television or on Thursday at 10:45 p.m. on Erste (as of July 2019). The program will be repeated on various ARD specialty channels and in the various third-party programs. The NDR lists all current broadcast and repeat dates on the extra 3 homepage.

Changes in the first

With the partial transition to the first, some changes were made: The program was extended by 15 minutes to 45 minutes, the studio set was rebuilt and various new studio acts were introduced on a regular basis, among other things. a. the satirists Oliver Kalkofe , Maxi Schafroth , Heinz Strunk , Torsten Sträter , the parodists Max Giermann and Michael Kessler as well as Kirstin Warnke and Janin Ullmann . In the beginning, actor Armin Rohde also appeared in the film section "The Bodyguard" as well as various prominent "cameo" surprise guests. With the partial transition to the first, nothing has changed in terms of the content of the program.

Trivia

Radio broadcast of the same name

From 1975 to 1998 there was an information program on the radio station SWF3 , which was broadcast daily from 12 noon to 1pm and was also called extra 3 .

Horse paddock gate

In 1992 Lea Rosh, head of the Lower Saxony State Broadcasting Corporation at the time, caused NDR internal upsets. She had "on short official channels" prevented a report from extra 3 about an exchange of letters previously known by the magazine Der Spiegel with the then Mayor of Potsdam and SPD party colleague Roshs Horst Gramlich . In it she had asked Gramlich to discreetly help her with the acquisition of a “farmhouse with a paddock”. Gramlich had replied through his office manager that he and Rosh were apparently worlds apart. The extra 3 editorial team complained about “classic censorship” after Rosh's successful intervention. NDR program director Jürgen Kellermeier asked Rosh to apologize to the editorial staff because of "means of hierarchical intervention, intimidation and threats in one's own private matter". Rosh sarcastically complied with this request .

Others

The current subtitle of the show is "The madness of the week". Until 2014 "The Only Satire Show" was used.
