Willi wills Wissen was a children's program focused on factual issues and everyday occurrences , produced by “ megaherz film und fernsehen ” on behalf of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation with the FWU . The program was first broadcast on KiKA from 2002 to 2010 , and regularly repeated on First German Television and on some regional channels of ARD . In 2020, the BR began to officially publish the episodes on YouTube. The producers were Franz Xaver Gernstl and Fidelis Mager.

The show had a uniform subject that was geared to specific life situations: The reporter Willi Weitzel tried to give young viewers insights into various topics and professions, e.g. B. Policeman , driver , fisherman , soldier , journalist , hop planter , butcher , farmer , emergency doctor and mayor . To do this, he visited representatives of these professions, accompanied them for a working day, had their work explained to him and discussed it with them.

In this way, informed Weitzel not only professionals, but also insight into the life mediated about the blind, hearing impaired, homeless, Jews or Sinti and Roma . In one of the episodes he was a guest at a boarding school.

Incident in November 2003

For the filming of the episode What's Going On Without A Home? The reporter Willi Weitzel stayed overnight with five homeless people at the Neptune Fountain in the Old Botanical Garden in Munich. At around 10 p.m., the camera team left the sleeping area. At around 1.30 a.m., Willi Weitzel woke up with a bleeding wound on his head that had to be sewn with five stitches. The perpetrators, who attacked him with a baseball bat while he was asleep, were initially able to escape undetected, but were later caught by the police.

In June 2020 a compilation of several short excerpts from the program was uploaded to a YouTube channel under the title "Willi wills know clips without context". The video received hundreds of thousands of views within a short period of time. Similar versions quickly spread to other social media such as Instagram and TikTok .

The various videos, called "Willi" or "Willi wills Wissen Memes ", achieved widespread popularity due to the statements made by Willi Weitzel , including possible sexual innuendos, black humor and especially jokes against children and other people in wheelchairs (see episode 126 "What goes in a wheelchair? "). The context of the statements was not at all or incompletely recognizable.

The rapper Manuellsen then published a video in which he insulted the presenter of the show as a " son of a bitch ". Weitzel then published a statement on Facebook in which he wrote that "those who are outraged about the film excerpts and see me as discriminatory [...] unfortunately [...] have been eaten up by those who [...] found the excerpts out of context torn ".

Since October 11, 2006, the series Gutefrage, next question has been broadcast as a three to four minute gap filler , in which Willi answers questions in a studio that children have asked him by letter or e-mail. With experiments, graphics or film clips, the reporter provides short and concise explanations.

Willi in the cinema

On March 5, 2009 the adventure documentary Willi and the wonders of this world opened in German cinemas. Willi Weitzel and his team traveled around the world for the shooting. The film shows episodes in Germany, in the Australian jungle, in Canada's polar bear capital Churchill , in Tokyo and in the Sahara . It is his first movie.

From A – Z

The Willi wills Wissen format has been available from A – Z since 2010 . In the ten-minute series, terms are explained for each letter of the alphabet by showing excerpts from Willi wills Wissen . A random number generator determines at the beginning of each sequence which letter it is about. With “H”, for example, Willi goes to a wedding, looks around a chicken yard, tries on lumberjack trousers or finds out a lot about rabbits.
