The CHIO Aachen is an international equestrian tournament ( Concours Hippique International Officiel ) that has been held in Aachen since 1924 . According to the regulations of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), each country may only host one CHIO. Thus the CHIO Aachen is the only event of its kind in Germany. The organizer is the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e. V., which was founded in 1898. The venue is the riding stadium in the Soers Sports Park . In addition to being named according to the nomenclature for tournaments , the CHIO has been held under the self-chosen name of the World Equestrian Festival since 1992 .

The CHIO Aachen consists of the disciplines show jumping , dressage riding , driving and the eventing and vaulting disciplines, which were held for the first time in 2007 . A winner will be determined in the individual and in the team classification (Nations Cup). In show jumping, the Aachen Grand Prix is held as part of the CHIO Aachen , which is the main competition on every Sunday of the event.

history

Dressage stadium during the CHIO Aachen 2008

The first riding and driving tournament of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein - at that time still associated with a horse race - took place on July 13, 1924, with the significant participation of the district administrator of the district of Aachen , Hermann Pütz . The event, which has been held annually since then (apart from a few exceptions mentioned below) with the disciplines of jumping, dressage and driving, lasted six days in 1927. This year the Aachen Grand Prix was also held for the first time , and a special performance was the daily demonstrations by the Spanish Riding School , which had traveled with twelve Lipizzaner stallions. The CHIO Aachen, which took place shortly before the outbreak of World War II from August 17 to 29, 1939, was the last until 1946. From 1947 onwards, the CHIO Aachen was held annually again.

In 1986 there was another interruption because that year the world championship in show jumping took place in Aachen. In 2015, for the 100th German CHIO, there was the next interruption, as the European Championships in five equestrian disciplines were held in Aachen in August this year. Due to this date, the 2015 German Nations Cup tournaments did not take place in Aachen. In May 2015, however, a three-day show jumping, dressage and driving tournament was held in Aachen, as part of which the Grand Prix of Aachen took place.

Since 2001 there has been an official partner country every year, which is presented with a special focus on local horse culture with various demonstrations and presentations as part of the supporting program.

After the successful World Equestrian Games in 2006 , the program of the CHIO Aachen was expanded in 2007 to include the disciplines of vaulting and eventing . The cross-country ride took place on the world championship course next to the riding stadium in the Aachen Soers. In 2007, the marathon ride of the carriages was held there for the first time as part of the CHIO, which traditionally took place in the Aachen forest up to the World Equestrian Games .

In 2008, the otherwise six-day tournament was held over ten days for the first time in over 40 years, as it had been decided to bring the vaulting competitions forward in order to defuse the tight program of competitions in what are now five disciplines. This was also maintained in the following years.

In 2019 the tournament took place from July 12th to 21st. Due to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo , the tournament should take place from May 29th to June 7th. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the CHIO in Aachen was postponed on March 25, 2020. The organizers wanted to reschedule the tournament later in the year, but canceled it on April 22, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After the cancellation, the organizers organized a smaller tournament on the site for September 4th to 6th, 2020.

program

The competition program lasts from Friday to Sunday of the following week. The exams take place during the day, and in the second week of the tournament, exams are also carried out under floodlights from Wednesday to Saturday . Due to the extensive program, exams often take place at the same time at the different venues on the tournament grounds.

On the Sunday of the first week, in addition to the vaulting competitions, the Soers Sunday is held, on this day with free admission a show program and an ecumenical service are carried out. The day before, a show program with horse & symphony takes place with live music from the Aachen Symphony Orchestra . After a day of rest on Monday, the partner country will be welcomed on Tuesday as part of the opening ceremony. The tournament ends on the Sunday evening of the second week with the farewell of the nations .

CVIO

The vaulters open the CHIO every year with the CVIO, the German Nations Cup of their discipline. It is held in the Albert-Vahle-Halle from Friday to Sunday of the first week of the tournament. It is advertised as CVIO 4 *.

CSIO

The Nations Cup tournament for show jumping at the CHIO Aachen lasts in the second week of the tournament from Wednesday to Sunday. The CSIO is advertised as a 5 * tournament.

The Nations Cup, which was held on Thursday evening, was one of the top European Nations Cups until 2013 . In 2014 Aachen is no longer part of the Nations Cup series and wants to continue holding the Nations Cup at a high level regardless of that.

The Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon is one of the classics in show jumping and is regularly one of the most highly endowed show jumping competitions in the world. In 2013 the examination was endowed with 1,000,000 euros for the first time. A bonus sponsored by Rolex, the “ Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping ” , will also be offered together with the Grand Prix of Geneva and Calgary .

CDIO

The German CDIO is one of the few Nations Cup tournaments in dressage worldwide. It is advertised as CDIO 5 * and is held in the second week of the tournament from Thursday to Sunday. The Nations Cup decision takes place in the Grand Prix de Dressage , besides a Grand Prix Spécial and the Grand Prix Freestyle (Great Dressage Prize of Aachen) are planned in the program. Up to four starters, each with one horse, are allowed in the CDIO per participating country. The Nations Cup test is part of the newly created Nations Cup for dressage riders in 2013 .

CAIO

The CHIO Aachen is also the German Nations Cup tournament for the four-in-hand drivers. It is also played from Wednesday to Sunday. Two separate evaluations are carried out, an individual and a team evaluation. The partial tests are the driving dressage test, the obstacle driving and the cross-country test. The terrain test will be carried out on Saturday for both evaluations together.

CCIO

Since 2007 Germany's Nations Cup in eventing has been held in Aachen. It is a CCIO 4 * -S (referred to as CICO 3 * until 2018), a short eventing test with individual and national classification. From the first season in 2012 to 2017, the CHIO Aachen was part of the Nations Cup of eventing riders .

CSIYH

Since 2011, the tests for young show jumpers have been advertised separately from the CSIO as CSIYH 1 *. The tests for seven and eight year old show jumpers take place in the second week from Tuesday to Saturday.

CDI

In addition to the CDIO, a CDI tour at 4 * level will also be organized as part of the CHIO Aachen. There are tests from Prix St. Georges to Grand Prix Spécial and a Grand Prix Freestyle, these tests are on the program in the second week of the tournament from Wednesday to Saturday evening. Here other starters and riders from the CDIO can start with other horses. Both the CDI and the CDIO serve the German dressage committee as a screening for the major international championships of the year (Olympic Games, World and European Championships).

CDIU25

In addition to the established dressage riders, the CHIO Aachen also offers starting opportunities for young dressage riders up to the age of 25. The CDIU25 exams ( Intermediaire II and Grand Prix Freestyle) take place in the second week of the tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Results

In 2015 there was no CHIO, instead jumping and dressage competitions were held in a three-day CSI 5 * and CDI 5 * tournament as well as two driving tests. The Versatility Nations Cup 2015 took place as part of the European Championship of the other disciplines.
