Isabell Werth (born July 21, 1969 in Issum ) is a German dressage rider . She is a six-time Olympic champion with a total of ten Olympic medals (6 × gold; 4 × silver), nine-time world champion, twenty-time European champion and fourteen-time German champion, making her the most successful rider and dressage rider of all time worldwide.

Career

In 1988 Isabell Werth passed the Abitur at the Rheinberger Amplonius-Gymnasium . She studied law and worked as a lawyer . From 2001 to 2004 she worked for Karstadt AG. She also sells an equestrian collection under her name.

Growing up as the daughter of an agricultural family, Werth had contact with horses from an early age. After she was initially active in show jumping and eventing, a friendship with a daughter of Uwe Schulten-Baumer resulted in contact with him. During Schulten-Baumer's training, who like Isabell Werth lived in Rheinberg, she switched to dressage riding. On New Year's Eve 1986, Schulten-Baumer offered her to ride his horses. Up until the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , her top horse was Gigolo FRH owned by Schulten-Baumers, who retired after the 2000 Games.

The sporting partnership Werth / Schulten-Baumer lasted until the end of 2001. Since Werth and Schulten-Baumer needed a distance from each other at this point and there were also differences with his stepdaughter Ellen Schulten-Baumer , Werth left his stable. In consultation with Werth's new patrons, Dietrich Schulze and Madeleine Winter-Schulze , they took over the majority of Werth's horses from Schulten-Baumer's possession. Werth then moved to the Winter-Schulze family farm in Mellendorf .

In 2004 she left the Winter-Schulze stable and went back to Rheinberg, where she has been running her own riding stable ever since. At the Stuttgart German Masters 2005, Werth and Satchmo set a new world record in the Grand Prix with 79.958% . This record was replaced in 2006 by Anky van Grunsven (81.333% with Salinero ).

At the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen , her top horse, Why not, fell out due to an injury. Nevertheless, she won team gold on her gelding Satchmo , who was considered a "wobbly candidate", became world champion in the Grand Prix Spécial and took bronze in the freestyle .

2008 Summer Olympics

At the 2008 Olympic Games , Werth was Olympic champion together with Nadine Capellmann and Heike Kemmer with the team and won silver in the individual behind the Dutch Anky van Grunsven . Werth herself won her fourth individual medal at the Olympics, a total of eight medals.

The World Cup finals at the beginning of 2007 to 2009 were highly successful for Isabell Werth. She won the 2007 final with Why not FRH and finished the 2008 and 2009 finals in second place. After a suspension in the second half of 2009, she was back in the German team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games with Why not FRH , which won the bronze medal here. At the 2010 World Equestrian Games, Isabell Werth was the flag bearer of the German team. In 2011 she played the European Championships with El Santo NRW .

While she was not at the start at the 2012 Olympic Games , Isabell Werth was able to qualify for the European Championships with Don Johnson FRH in 2013 and contributed to the German team gold medal. In the Grand Prix Spécial, however, she had to accept clear mistakes in the first piaffe and the single changes and only came in behind.

At the 2014 World Equestrian Games , Isabell Werth competed with Bella Rose . She won the team gold medal with the then 10-year-old mare, which she said was the best horse she had ever had. With this victory, she achieved her seventh world title, overtaking Reiner Klimke and has been the sole record holder ever since. Before the individual competitions of the World Equestrian Games, Werth withdrew Bella Rose from the other competitions due to signs of dermatitis.

While Isabell Werth was highly successful with Bella Rose at the World Cup in Stuttgart in November 2014, the mare dropped out due to injury in 2015 and 2016. Don Johnson FRH , like Werth's European Championship horse two years earlier in 2015 , was also injured in the 2016 Olympic season. Therefore Isabell Werth decided to use the mare Weihegold OLD, ridden by her rider Beatrice Buchwald, for the Olympic qualification. Werth had already presented the mare in two World Cup competitions in the 2015/2016 World Cup season (the Amsterdam World Cup competition was Weihegold OLD 's first ever Grand Prix Freestyle ). At the first sighting, the German Championships in Balve, Werth unexpectedly won the gold medal in the Grand Prix Spécial with Weihegold . At the CHIO Aachen, the couple was nominated for the 2016 Olympic Games .

2016 Summer Olympics

At the 2016 Olympic Games , she and her horse Weihegold OLD won the gold medal in the team evaluation and the silver medal in the individual evaluation with a score of 89.071%. With ten Olympic medals, she replaced Reiner Klimke as the most successful rider at the Olympic Games .

In the 2016/2017 World Cup season , Werth was the dominant rider, winning five stages in the Western European League with three horses ( Weihegold OLD , Don Johnson FRH and Emilio ). At the World Cup Freestyle in Lyon, she achieved a rating of over 90 percent for the first time. In Omaha she won the World Cup final for dressage riders for the third time , with Weihegold OLD she received 90.704 percent here.

At the CHIO Aachen 2018 she won the Great Dressage Prize of Aachen for the twelfth time . Werth rode Bella Rose here , who was only going to her second tournament in Aachen after her injury break. The mare had not competed in competition since November 2014. When drawing up the longlist for the 2018 World Equestrian Games , Isabell Werth was named with three horses. Before the championship, Werth and the national trainer decided not to choose Weihegold , who was on world number one, or Emilio , who was on world number two , but Bella Rose . This decision turned out to be successful, Werth won gold both with the team and in the individual.

17 years after her first World Cup final victory, Isabell Werth won the 2019 World Cup final with Weihegold , again in Gothenburg . This was her third World Cup final victory in a row - only Anky van Grunsven had achieved this before (1995 to 1997 and 2004 to 2006). After Werth was first German runner-up in the Grand Prix Spécial with Emilio in June 2019 , she won the title in the Grand Prix Freestyle. At the European Championships in Rotterdam , Bella Rose achieved a new joint best in each of the three special stages, which resulted in triple gold.

In June 2020 she was ranked 1st with Bella Rose , 2nd with Weihegold and 9th with Emilio in the world rankings.

Isabell Werth was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for her equestrian achievements . In the election for Sportswoman of the Year 2017 , the 48-year-old took third place in December.

Werth has been an ambassador for the Christoffel Blind Mission since January 2006 . Her partner is the former Karstadt manager Wolfgang Urban , with whom she has a son who was born in 2009.

doping

On June 24, 2009 it became known that her gelding Whisper had tested positive for the banned substance fluphenazine in the A-sample at the Whisper tournament in Wiesbaden . It has therefore been banned from all tournaments by the FEI World Federation until further notice . On September 2, 2009, Werth was sentenced by the FEI to a six-month ban, which expired on December 22 of the same year (the ban began on June 23).

At the Rhineland Championships 2012, a nationally advertised tournament, cimetidine , a medicinal substance used to treat stomach complaints , was found in her horse El Santo NRW as part of a medication check . This is a substance that is allowed in international tournaments subject to certain rules, but is considered a prohibited medication according to national regulations. After research, Werth explained the find by saying that there was a defect in the drinking system in her stall. The remedy that had been given to another horse got into the drinking trough of El Santo NRW . In the first instance, Werth was blocked because of the positive medication control, which was due to a negligent breach of duty of care in the stable. In the second instance, the ban was lifted and the proceedings were discontinued against payment of a fine.

computer game

In 2007 a computer game called " Isabell Werth - Equestrian Sport " was published by the French company Dancing Dots. In Germany the game was distributed by Frogster Interactive. It simulates a three-day eventing exam with cross country riding , jumping and dressage with Isabell Werth as a virtual trainer. It gives advice on how best to ride a horse and how obstacles can be tackled.
