Hubertus Schmidt comes from a family that is traditionally connected to horse breeding and riding. His father, Hubert Schmidt senior, was trained as a soldier to be a rider. The Fleyenhof near Etteln in Westphalia , which Hubertus Schmidt runs as a training and breeding stable, has been run by the family since the 17th century. There has been a stud there since the 1920s . In the 1960s there was a change from cold blood to warm blood breeding . Hubertus Schmidt began riding the family's brood mares , and at the age of nine he received his first riding lesson in the Hamborn Castle Riding School . In the course of the relocation of the Fleyenhof due to a flood disaster, a riding facility was built in 1972. As a result, Hubertus Schmidt's riding lessons intensified, first he was taught by his father, later by the riders employed in the company.

In 1976 Hubertus Schmidt began his apprenticeship as a rider , first at the Fleyenhof and from 1977 in the Bielefeld riding and driving club with Hans Gerlach, where he passed the exam in 1978. In 1983 he passed the master's examination with the special award of the Stensbeck badge . In 1984 he won his first advanced level dressage on the horse Pacifik, three years later he was placed in a Grand Prix de Dressage for the first time , this time with Playboy. He also had successes in jumping up to S level . Hubertus Schmidt repeatedly took part in courses, before his master's examination at the German Riding School in Warendorf , and later with Reiner Klimke and Harry Boldt , among others . In 1985 he took over the Fleyenhof together with his wife Doris, today there are around 60 horses there. Hubertus Schmidt has trained over thirty horses to the Grand Prix level and trains several foreign riders, including the Finnish dressage team.

The breakthrough in top dressage came at the end of the 1990s. From 1997 to 2004 Hubertus Schmidt was champion of professional riders five times. After several silver medals and a bronze medal, he became German dressage champion in 2005, which he was able to repeat in 2007. His coach was Klaus Balkenhol in 1999 . His greatest success so far is the nomination for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where he achieved 5th place in the individual ranking and was thus the second best of the German riders. With the team he won the gold medal. Another highlight was the individual silver medal at the 2005 European Championships and the gold medal with the team. He also won team gold at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen . He achieved these successes together with his Hanoverian chestnut mare Wansuela Suerte (by Warkant), who was born in 1993 . In 2008 she was retired from dressage at the international dressage and jumping festival in Verden.

Due to an illness of his wife, Schmidt sold his then top young horse Donnelly at the beginning of 2011 and also gave the national coaching position for Swedish dressage riders, which he was doing at the time, to Kyra Kyrklund .

In 2016 Schmidt took on the Westphalian stallion Escolar, with whom he was successful for the first time at Grand Prix level in 2018 and with whom he will be part of the German Olympic team in 2020. In April 2020 the two were 33rd in the world dressage rankings.

Hubertus Schmidt is married and has a daughter and a son.
