Matthias Alexander Rath

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Alexander Rath (born August 2, 1984 in Lübeck ), often just called Matthias Rath , is a German dressage rider.

Life / athletic career

First successes

Matthias Alexander Rath comes from a successful family of equestrians: his father, Klaus-Martin Rath is a master horse manager; his uncle, Karsten Huck , a successful show jumper and bronze medalist at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . He was also influenced by his stepmother, Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff .

At the age of three he was already interested in dressage and watched his father ride for hours. He celebrated his first successes with the horses of his stepmother Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff, first with Red Liner , later (early 2006) he took over Renoir-Unicef . With Renoir-Unicef he gained his first experience at Grand Prix level. At that time, with the help of Renoir-Unicef , who was retired from sport in 2007, he reached number 65 in the world rankings.

International breakthrough

Rath was able to record a significant career leap after his stepmother had decided to leave him her successful horse Sterntaler-Unicef . Already at his first international tournament with Sterntaler-Unicef he was able to attract attention, with a second place in the strong Grand Prix Spécial as part of the Horses & Dreams tournament in Hagen am Teutoburg Forest (April 2008). Six weeks later he became the (last) German dressage champion in the men's class. As a result of this performance, he was appointed to the championship squad, and the line-up for the Nations Cup team at the CHIO Aachen followed.

In 2009 and 2010 he was part of the German dressage team at the international championships with Sterntaler-Unicef .

In addition to his equestrian career, he studied business administration and finished his studies in May 2011. As a result, he took over the management of the breeding station at the family-owned Schafhof stud.

Time with Totilas

After Paul Schockemöhle bought the "wonder horse" Totilas , previously ridden by Edward Gal , in October 2010 , he formed an owner association with Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff. Rath became the new rider of Totilas. At the beginning of June 2011 they played the first joint tournament at the CDI 3 * Munich-Riem. Two weeks later, Totilas won the German championship titles in the Grand Prix Spécial and in the Grand Prix Freestyle. At the CHIO Aachen they won all three individual tests in the CDIO 5 * tour. As a result, Rath and Totilas were nominated for the German European Championship team , where neither could win individual medals.

As a result, several tournament appearances were canceled due to injuries. After the European Championships in 2011 there was an eight-month tournament break, interrupted only by two presentations at stallion shows. Rath and Totilas had their first tournament appearance in 2012 at the CDI 4 * Horses & Dreams in Hagen aTW, where they won the Grand Prix de Dressage (83.809%).

Due to an illness Rath could not take part in the CHIO Aachen 2012, due to a relapse of the illness on July 5, 2012 the end of participation in the 2012 Olympic Games was announced. The rides in Hagen remained the last joint tournament appearances for over two years, only in May 2014 Rath and Totilas started again at the CDI 3 * Kapellen. During this time, Rath was active in sport with young horses. Shortly before the start of the 2014 World Equestrian Games , Totilas kicked himself against an over leg in the training camp, whereupon it was decided to forego participation "for the benefit of the horse". At the 2015 European Championships in Aachen , Rath and Totilas received a rating of only 75.971 percent in the team competition, so that the German team only achieved bronze. After the ride was marked by clear imprecise timing , Totilas was later taken to a veterinary clinic and examined, where bone edema was found on the left hind leg.

After further setbacks, Schockemöhle spoke out in favor of Totilas' final career.

After 2015

In the years 2016 to 2018, Rath devoted himself to training younger horses in particular. International tournament starts up to intermediaire level took place primarily at tournaments in southern Europe. With the Hanoverian stallion Destacado , he finished second at the World Championships for 5-year-old dressage horses in 2018. For the first time since 2015, Rath was part of a German team again in July 2019: at the CDIO 5 * Falsterbo he was with the Stallion Foundation , which will be his Grand -Prix had made his debut at the start.
