Venues of the 2014 World Equestrian Games

The 2014 World Equestrian Games (French Jeux équestres mondiaux de 2014 ) took place from 23 August to 7 September 2014 in Normandy , with the main venue being Caen .

The 2014 World Equestrian Games were the world championships in the following eight equestrian disciplines:

A new addition to the program in 2014 was double vaulting (pas de deux).

Award

At the end of March 2009, the FEI announced that the 2014 World Equestrian Games had been awarded to the Basse-Normandie region . There were no other applicants for the event. After eight years, the World Equestrian Games will take place in Europe again.

Test tournaments

Show jumper at the test tournament in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano

Three test tournaments were held in preparation for the World Equestrian Games. A CCI 2 * event was held in Haras du Pin from August 15 to 18, 2013 . Here Vittoria Panizzon from Italy won with Merlots Magic . The second test tournament was held in Caen for the four-in-hand drivers. This tournament, advertised as CAI-A 4, was held from August 22nd to 25th, 2013, victory went to the American Chester Weber and his team.

A good year later, the third test tournament took place in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano in Caen, it was advertised as CDI 3 * and CSI 2 * . Among the dressage riders, Gareth Hughes (Great Britain) won the Grand Prix with Nadonna , Carl Hester (Great Britain) with Nip Tuck in the Grand Prix Spécial and Cristobal Belmonte (Spain) with Diavolo II de Laubry . The French rider Patrice Delaveau won the show jumping Grand Prix with Ornella Mail . At this test event, there were still defects in the stable area, which is housed on artificial turf pitches .

criticism

The World Equestrian Games suffered from bad weather conditions in the first week and there was considerable rainfall. This had consequences above all for the venues away from Caen: The distance riders' course was particularly badly hit, the riders and horses sometimes had to fight their way through 30 centimeters of mud. Only 38 of 170 starter pairs crossed the finish line. The world federation FEI stated that the veterinarians were extremely careful to protect the horses.

Already at an early stage of the endurance ride, Dorado , the gelding of the Costa Rican rider Claudia Romero Chacon, fell over a root on the edge of the given path and hit his head against a tree, which resulted in fatal head injuries. The rider came to a hospital. The national coach of the German endurance riders demanded that the endurance ride must have consequences. Contrary to current practice, the organizer did not allow the route to be traveled in advance. The few sections that could be viewed in advance would have put the team bosses on alert, so almost all nations had criticized before the ride and demanded that the route be defused. However, nothing has been changed, although there were opportunities for better routes that could be prepared.

At first, the résumé of the cross-country course was more positive: in Haras du Pin, too, the rain had made the conditions very difficult, the ground was soaked with water. Nevertheless, here, where international eventing takes place every year, better conditions could be created with specially laid out riding trails with drainage, even if, according to riders, not worthy of the world championship. Before the start of the test, two obstacles were removed from the track, which shortened the distance by 500 meters. More than two thirds of the starters finished the cross-country course, but many of the horses were exhausted. According to the chief veterinarian on site, most of the horses generally finished the route in good shape.

Shortly before the end of the eventing day, a sad event occurred: Wild Lone , the horse of the British team rider Harry Meade, collapsed dead in the warm-up area while being dry after the finish. According to the rider, the gelding was still fresh on the route, the ground conditions did not play a role in the collapse of the horse.

In addition to the route conditions, there was also criticism in other areas: the accommodation and food for the eventing riders would have been lacking, so many riders would have preferred the living areas of their horse transporters to living containers for three people each. The inadequate supply of spectators and an inadequate transport system were also criticized. Even before the World Equestrian Games "halftime", the Australian equestrian journalist Christopher Hector described the event as Worst Ever Games (the worst games ever; play on words with the abbreviation WEG, World Equestrian Games), the circumstances were worse than at the 1994 World Equestrian Games in The Hague. Other journalists also agreed in principle with this statement.

Venues

Stade Michel-d'Ornano during the Grand Prix de Dressage

The venues are spread across Normandy, with the main focus in Caen. The opening and closing ceremonies take place here in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano , a football stadium that has been converted into a riding arena, and the dressage competitions as well as the jumping and eventing are also held here.

The second major venue in Caen is the Zénith , a hall with 4000 seats. This is where the vaulters will hold their competitions. In the vicinity are the exhibition halls of Caen (Caen Expo-Congrès) . The competitions in Reining take place here. Also in Caen is the Hippodrome de la Prairie harness racing track , where four-in-hand drivers and dressage riders with disabilities compete during the World Equestrian Games.

A good 40 kilometers east of Caen, in Deauville , polo competitions are shown outside the normal program of the World Equestrian Games. The second demonstration sport, horseball, is presented in Saint-Lô . At the western end of Normandy, around Sartilly , in front of the backdrop of Mont-Saint-Michel , the endurance riders will carry out their ride.

The traditional national stud Haras du Pin is located south of Caen . Here, where eventing tournaments are held regularly, the eventing riders will do their dressage and cross-country rides during the World Equestrian Games.

Opening ceremony and closing ceremony

The opening ceremony took place in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano. Before the actual opening ceremony began, various horse breeds from all over the world were presented to the public in short show numbers . As a start to the opening ceremony, the Patrouille de France drew the French flag in the sky above the stadium. On the ground, the cavalry regiment of the Garde républicaine took over with a musical performance. Then the classic invasion of the nations was on the program, whereby the flag was initially not carried by the flag bearers of the nations, but by riders on Percheron horses . Only at the end of the team's round through the stadium was the flag handed over to the flag bearer while the rest of the nation's athletes left the stadium. The standard bearer of the German team was Hannelore Brenner .

The opening was made by three speakers: First, the President of the Organizing Committee and the Regional Council of the Basse-Normandie Region, Laurent Beauvais , made his speech. Then FEI President Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein spoke in French and English. Prime Minister Manuel Valls then opened the games with a few words . Valls was the first prime minister of any state to open World Equestrian Games.

The dressage judge Anne Peain and, as a representative for the athletes, the show jumping rider Kevin Staut took an oath, comparable to the Olympic oath . After another musical demonstration by the Cavalry Regiment of the Garde Républicaine, the show part of the opening ceremony began with light effects, dance and riding demonstrations.

The closing ceremony, which took place after the award ceremony of the individual ranking of the show jumping riders, began like the opening ceremony with show numbers. The flags of the nations were carried into the stadium by volunteers, and the work of the volunteers was recognized. All the gold medal winners from the athletes who also entered the stadium were allowed to present themselves again. After an interim program, which included a demonstration of famous Selle Français stallions, the three final speakers followed. As in the opening ceremony, Laurent Beauvais spoke first. This handed over to Pauline Quinlan, Mayor of Bromont . This looked ahead to the 2018 World Equestrian Games in the predominantly French-speaking Bromont in the Canadian province of Québec. Princess Haya bint al-Hussein was the last speaker in front of the microphone, for the last time as FEI President in front of a large audience. Her term of office ended in December 2014.

Reining

  • 82 starter pairs, 16 teams

The participating nations were each allowed to send four riders, each with one horse, to the reining competitions at the World Equestrian Games. In addition, the teams were able to send two individual riders and their horses to Normandy.

The first partial test was the team competition, which was held over a period of two days. The three best results for the respective team counted. This first partial examination also counted as a qualification for the individual evaluation. The best 15 rider-horse pairs qualified directly for the final, ranks 16 to 35 moved into another qualification test. From this test, in addition to the top 15 from the first sub-test, the top five from the second qualification test also moved in. In the final of the individual evaluation, the medal winners of the individual evaluation were determined.

Team ranking

In the team standings, the "mother nation of Reining", the United States, clearly won again.

Endurance riding

  • 166 starter pairs, 33 teams

The participating nations were each allowed to send five endurance riders with their horses to the World Equestrian Games. The individual and team decisions were held in one competition, with three or four riders forming a team in the latter case (the best three results per team were included in the evaluation).

At the 2014 World Equestrian Games, the riding route for endurance riders was 160 kilometers long and divided into six loop-shaped sections (the so-called loops). Between the individual sections, veterinary examinations were carried out at the so-called " VetGates " with mandatory breaks for the horses.

Even the start of the endurance test was difficult. The loamy ground was already soaked at the start, even walking on the ground was difficult for people. This was the start of a devastating day. The route was classified as dangerous for the riders not only, but especially because of the soil conditions; the paths had turned into mud tracks several centimeters deep. Many riders gave up prematurely or were taken out of the competition at the VetGates. In the end, only 38 starter pairs made it to the finish and the ranking, of 33 teams only three achieved a team result (i.e. at least three horse-rider pairs at the finish).

Dorado , the gelding of the Costa Rican rider Claudia Romero Chacon, died at an early stage of the endurance ride from fatal head injuries after a collision with a tree. His rider was taken to a hospital. As a result of the competition, the national coach of the German endurance riders demanded that this endurance ride must have consequences (see also the criticism section ).

The horse Tra Flama of the South African Giliese de Villiers, who did not finish the test, was found to have positive medication. Phenylbutazone and its metabolite oxyphenbutazone were found in the sample .

dressage

Gold medal winner in both individual dressage scores: Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro
  • 100 starter pairs from 31 nations, 24 teams

The participating nations can send four dressage riders each with one horse to the World Equestrian Games.

The first partial test was traditionally the Grand Prix de Dressage . All dressage riders participating in the World Equestrian Games competed. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking. The team medals were awarded on the basis of this team ranking.

The best 30 participants in the Grand Prix de Dressage were allowed to take part in the second test, the Grand Prix Spécial . The individual medals of the Grand Prix Spécial were awarded on the basis of the result of the Grand Prix Spécial.

The dressage riders who made it into the top 15 of the individual ranking of the Grand Prix Spécial were able to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle . If more than three riders from one or more nations made it into the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, the lowest placed (fourth) rider of the respective nation should not take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. For this purpose, a different rider moved up after the placement of the Grand Prix Spécial. Based on the result of the Grand Prix Freestyle, the individual medals of the Grand Prix Freestyle were awarded.

Team ranking

Even before the World Equestrian Games began, Undercover , Edward Gal's current top horse, and Totilas, two of the strongest couples, had failed. The Dutch team also had to cope with the failure of Siro , Danielle Heijkoop's horse , before the World Equestrian Games .

The German team had little luck in the team competition and had to be the first of 24 teams to start. Fabienne Lütkemeier showed a good performance with 73.586 percent, but was the team's discarded result in the end. Germany came up with an overall result of 241,700 percent, which gives an average of over 80 percent for the three counting couples. Isabell Werth and her 10-year-old mare Bella Rose confirmed their good performance at the CHIO Aachen and in Caen they even became the strongest German couple ahead of Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW (second place in the individual results).

The British team came in second, benefiting from the very good results of Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro . Otherwise, the team could not fully compensate for the lack of horses such as Uthopia or Mistral Hojris , who helped make the 2012 Olympic victory possible. Despite the weakened team, especially due to Parzival with Adelinde Cornelissen, who returned after a long break, the Netherlands still got bronze. Despite a Digby (with Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein) brought back into the sport especially for the World Equestrian Games, Denmark was unable to match fourth place at the domestic European championship with a seventh place , but this team was also weakened by failures.

Individual classification: Grand Prix Spécial

Victory in the Grand Prix Spécial went to the number 1 pair in the world rankings, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro , who also had the best result in the Grand Prix de Dressage. The second-placed pair of the Grand Prix was missing from the starting field, Isabell Werth's horse Bella Rose had shown signs of dermis inflammation the day before, whereupon Werth withdrew the mare from other competitions.

The other medals were secured by Helen Langehanenberg and Kristina Sprehe with their stallions. Regarding the result of Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival , who came in fourth place, there was a complaint by the Dutch federation: Cornelissen had received points deductions for breaking in too late. However, the association states that the rider was stopped by a steward in the tunnel to the stadium. Regardless of the decision, Adelinde Cornelissen will be in fourth place, which is more than the disputed percentage points behind third place.

Individual ranking: Grand Prix Freestyle

The top group of the Grand Prix Spécial also confirmed their achievements in the freestyle: Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro were the only couple to achieve over 90 percent and thus clearly won. With a very strong result of 88 percent, Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW came silver. The third medal went to Adelinde Cornelissen with Parzival , while the third-placed Spécial, Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH , came fourth.

In fifth place came one of the surprises of the World Equestrian Games: Laura Graves was already placed in the Grand Prix Spécial with Verdade's best American rider and also clearly ahead of her compatriot Steffen Peters in the freestyle. 2014 is the first season for Graves in which she competes internationally at Grand Prix level.

Dressage for disabled riders

Sophie Christiansen (Grade Ia) and Janeiro at the 2014 World Equestrian Games
  • 100 starter pairs from 33 nations, 19 teams

The team evaluation in "Para-Dressage" followed a complex set of rules in order to make the performance of the participants with different degrees of handicap comparable. A team was made up of up to four riders from each nation, with the three best results being included in the rating. At least one rider per team had to be assigned to grades Ia , Ib or II . In addition, the rule was that no more than three riders per team were allowed to belong to one grade. The team competition consisted of two special stages. The second team test after which the team medals are awarded is called the championship test. In both valuation tests, specific, fixed tasks were ridden for each grade.

The individual evaluation was carried out separately from the team evaluation; in addition to the team riders, other individual riders also compete here. The second team test was also the first partial test of the individual evaluation. The second part of the individual evaluation was the freestyle, in which the riders put together the prescribed lessons individually for an examination. Two world champions were determined per grade, one in the championship test and one in the freestyle. So, including the team competition, a total of eleven sets of medals were awarded.

The Canadian rider Selena O'Hanlon with Foxwood High on the cross-country course (41st place in the final ranking in the individual ranking and seventh place with the team)
  • 91 starter pairs, 16 teams

The nations were each allowed to send six riders with one horse each to the eventing competitions of the World Equestrian Games. Of these, four participants per nation formed the team, of which the three best results entered the team ranking. The other two riders only competed in the individual classification.

An obstacle with a predetermined breaking point, part of the off-road course of the World Equestrian Games 2014

The penalty points achieved in the partial exams were added up and the individual and team scores were determined on the basis of this result. The cross-country course corresponded to the level of a CCI 4 * test. Several obstacles were provided with predetermined breaking points on the course to reduce the risk of falls.

The eventing competition suffered from the bad weather conditions, in particular the off-road day (see also the criticism section ). The dressage test ended with a guided tour by Sandra Auffarth, who scored 35.2 minus points with Opgun Louvo , which corresponds to a dressage result of 76.56 percent. In second place came William Fox-Pitt with Chilli Morning , one of the team rankings led Germany with 8.6 minus points ahead of the New Zealand team.

The dressage result was clearly mixed up on the day off because no starter pair reached the finish line in the ideal time and there were many negative points for exceeding the time. The so far top placed New Zealand team could only bring two riders to the finish. Belgium, the United States, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and Poland were also in the ranking with only two team riders left (although Sweden and Poland only started with three riders in the overall competition anyway). In the individual classification, Fox-Pitt overtook Sandra Auffarth and was thus in the lead with 1.7 minus points. The individual world champion from 2010, Michael Jung, was now in third place with Rocana .

Despite the strenuous conditions in the area, only two horses were not fit enough for the rest of the competition at the second constitutional test, which took place the morning before the jumping section test and were eliminated. The British team was hit hard, not only having to deal with the individual shock with the death of Harry Meade's horse Wild Lone , but also having to do without their fourth team pair.

The jumping competition took place in the large Stade Michel-d'Ornano in Caen in front of a good 20,000 spectators. In the team standings little changed in the leading group, only Australia fell from third to fifth place, while the Dutch team worked their way up from fifth place to bronze. Silver went to Great Britain with a clear lead over the Dutch, and the German team won the gold medal with another 20 minus points over the British.

The big loser in the top group of the individual classification was Andrew Nicholson, before the jumping who was in fifth place with Nereo, only 2.2 minus points behind the leader. He had three obstacle errors (thus 12 more minus points) and was only eighth in the final ranking. William Fox-Pitt and Chilli Morning had only one drop , but this dropped them to third place. Both Michael Jung and Sandra Auffarth made no mistakes with their horses and thus secured individual silver and gold.

Maxime Livio , who originally took fifth place in the individual ranking, was disqualified. A positive medication was found in his horse Qalao des Mers . The sedative acepromazine was found in the sample , and the B sample also confirmed the find. In an interview, Livio stated that, according to an expert opinion, the substance must have been administered on the night of August 27th to August 28th. At night, the only way to get into the stables is to notify the steward and sign a form with him. Neither he nor any of his keepers was with the horses that night. In April 2015 the FEI Tribunal decided to disqualify Livio. Due to the World Championship regulations, this disqualification not only led to exclusion from the individual ranking, but also disqualified the French eventing team. France also lost its qualification for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Leap

Edwina Tops-Alexander and Ego van Orti at the 2014 World Equestrian Games
  • 153 starter pairs, 33 teams

The participating nations are allowed to send five show jumpers each with one horse to the World Equestrian Games. Of these, four rider-horse pairs each took part in the team and individual competition. The fifth rider serves exclusively as a reserve and is not allowed to start unless another team rider of his nation fails before the start of the competitions.

The mode of the team evaluation consisted of two partial tests with a total of three laps. For the individual evaluation, the tests of the team evaluation and two further tests count.

The first team and individual competition for show jumpers was a time competition . The winner of the time jumping was awarded zero penalty points after the test. The time difference between the winner and the other riders was multiplied by 0.5 and thus resulted in their number of penalty points.

The decision about the team medals was made in the second special stage. This competition was the classic Nations Cup, it was held as a jumping competition with two rounds . The penalty points from the first test were carried over to the second test. Only the ten best teams in the overall standings started here in the second round after the first round. The remaining riders took part in the second round only as individual riders. After the second round, the team medals were awarded. If two or more teams had tied for first place after the second round, a jump-off would have decided the award of the gold medal.

For the third sub-test of the individual evaluation, the individual final qualification, the best 30 individual riders qualify after the first two evaluation tests. The previous penalty points are retained. This is another time a jumping competition with two rounds. After these two rounds, places 30 to 5 in the individual ranking are determined.

The best four rider-horse pairs after the previous jumping competitions start in another competition, a jumping competition with horse change over four rounds. The penalty points from the previous jumping competitions will not be taken. Each of the four riders starts first with his own horse, then with the horses of his three competitors from this final test. If there is no winner because of the equality of penalty points, since the 2010 World Equestrian Games, the decision that passed after the second round of the third partial test will be decisive.

Team ranking

After the time jump, the team of France was in the lead in front of their home crowd. Sweden followed with less than a penalty point. The United States team came in third, confirming their good performance in the Nations Cup series . Germany followed in fourth place, 0.10 penalty points behind, a deficit that was to remain until the last team test.

In the first round of the classic Nations Cup, France lost its lead and dropped to fourth place with eight penalty points added. Sweden also slipped, with twelve penalty points added, they only came in seventh in the interim ranking. The Dutch show jumpers achieved a flawless result in this first round and thus fought their way from fifth place to the top. Eliminated after this round were, among others, Switzerland (11th place) and team Olympic champions Great Britain, who only came in 18th place.

The last round of the Nations Cup ranking was fair but difficult enough for a World Cup: there were quite a few mistakes, but hardly any rider had to accept more than one obstacle drop. The time to be ridden was tight, but solvable for most of the starter pairs. The best team result in this round came from France as the leading group with two faultless rides. This was also achieved by Brazil, which was able to hold onto fifth place. For the Netherlands, the United States and Germany only one team rider managed a fault-free ride with his horse, the other team riders of these teams each had an obstacle error (with one German and one Dutch starter pair there was also a time penalty, these results each formed the deleted result ). However, since the Netherlands had a fairly large lead before the last round, they were able to maintain their lead and thus won team gold. France moved up to silver, about 2½ penalty points ahead of the United States on bronze. The deficit of 0.10 penalty points, which existed since the time competition, was missing for Germany in the end to a medal rank.

Individual evaluation

In the first partial test, the time jumping test, the only 19-year-old Irishman Bertram Allen (winner of the CSIO 5 * Dublin 2014 Grand Prix) with Molly Malone V won . All of them went into the following test without penalty points, in the final result of the individual evaluation he came in seventh place. Just behind him, in second place in the time jumping test, was Patrice Delaveau with Orient Express . For Delaveau only one obstacle error was added to the 0.08 penalty points in the course of the other four rides from the final test with horse change, so that he is 4.08 penalty points ahead of the horse change. Beezie Madden and Cortes 'C' did just as well , third in the time competition (0.16 penalty points) and with 4.16 penalty points after five rides they also qualified for the final with horse change. For Rolf-Göran Bengtsson only four penalty points were added after the time competition, for Jeroen Dubbeldam five penalty points were added. Both complete the final test by changing horses.

From an Austrian point of view, the good performance of 22-year-old Stefanie Bistan, who came in 20th place with her mare Apollonia, was pleasing . Steve Guerdat and Nino des Buissonnets came 11th as the only Swiss in the test of the 30 best show jumpers . Abdelkebir Ouaddar, who trained in France and came 13th with Quickly de Kreisker , delivered one of the best results for an African show jumper at championships .

After the German team narrowly missed a medal in the team classification, all four German riders were still qualified for the test of the 30 best show jumpers. Ludger Beerbaum and Chiara were in 30th place, with about 10 penalty points behind Beezie Madden, who was leading at the time, so he decided not to participate. Christian Ahlmann, who was in tenth place with Codex One at this point in time and would have qualified for the final with a horse change with two possible clear rounds, also did without. Ahlmann's resignation was due, among other things, to injuries to the rider and horse earlier in the season as well as the rest of the tournament season. The dissatisfaction with these waivers was made known in the German fan block in the Stade Michel-d'Ornano with a protest poster.

Daniel Deußer, who was fourth with Cornet d'Amour after four rides , also had a chance at the final test . On his fifth ride during the World Equestrian Games, however, the bar of an obstacle fell, with these additional four penalty points he came in sixth place in the final result. Marcus Ehning worked together with Cornado NRW in the third partial test from 20th place to tenth place in the final result.

The final of the best four show jumpers, in which all four riders started again without penalty points, sorted the order of the best four again vigorously. As the only rider without a fault during this final test, the individual Olympic champion from 2000, Jeroen Dubbeldam, secured the gold medal. Patrice Delaveau just missed it and caught a time penalty with Rolf-Göran Bengtsson's stallion Casall . After the two previous riders each had an obstacle error with Casall , Delaveau rode with him at a reduced basic pace. Only Dubbeldam, as Casall 's last rider , managed to keep his time clear, which gave him the decisive lead.

The final was not very happy for Beezie Madden, who already knew the situation of a final with horse change from the 2006 World Equestrian Games, and for Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, who was sometimes considered the favorite in the test with horse change. Bengtsson had one fault in the obstacle with three horses (also with his own horse), and with Dubbeldam's horse he also got two time penalty points. Madden only managed a clean lap with her own horse, Cortes 'C'. Cortes 'C' made no mistakes with all riders and was therefore clearly the best horse in this test. Orient Express (8 penalty points), Casall (9 penalty points) and Zenith (10 penalty points) followed one another on the other places .

Vaulting

The Swiss vaulting athlete Simone Jäiser at the 2014 World Equestrian Games
  • 179 registered vaulters from 17 nations

At the beginning, both the individual vaulters and the groups completed a compulsory test and a freestyle test . The best 15 women and men as well as the best twelve groups from the first partial test were allowed to take part in the final. The individual vaulters completed both a technique program and a freestyle, whereas the groups only had to compete in the freestyle. After the two partial tests, the medals of the individual vaulters women, the individual vaulters men and the groups were awarded based on the average of the individual partial tests. If the scores were equal in the overall ranking, the better duty would have decided.

A new addition to the vaulting program was double vaulting, usually called pas de deux. After the pas de deux has been part of the European Championships since 2009 and part of the World Championships since 2012 , it also celebrated its premiere in 2014 as part of the World Equestrian Games. The program of the double voluteers consists exclusively of two freestyle tests.

The individual performances were evaluated by eight tournament judges.

Team ranking

The compulsory test of the team evaluation (group vaulting) took place on September 2nd, the first freestyle test on September 3rd and the freestyle of the best 12 teams on September 5th. There were 17 teams at the start.

In the final ranking, three teams got a score of eight points. After the European Championships in 2013 , Team Neuss , which represents Germany, also won team gold at the World Equestrian Games. Switzerland, which had a gap of only 0.033 points after the first freestyle, showed the German team a second freestyle, which was rated with 9.058 points. This increased the lead to 0.221 points and the Swiss team won the silver medal. Austria, after compulsory in the lead and still in third place after the first freestyle, only got 7,841 points in the second freestyle and was thus a good point worse than France, which moved up to bronze. The United States, whose team had won gold in previous value equestrian games four years earlier, only finished seventh in 2014.

Individual ranking women

In the women's individual standings, Joanne Eccles won clearly ahead of the Italian Anna Cavallaro. Eccles became world champion in Caen for the third time in a row. The 2013 European champion, Rikke Laumann, was still in the lead after the first partial test, but slipped to fourth place in the overall ranking during the course of the tests.

Individual ranking men

In the men's category, the French vaulting athlete Jacques Ferrari, who had already won the European championships a year earlier, won. The 2012 world champion, Nicolas Andreani, came in second. Erik Oese won the individual bronze medal, just 0.015 points behind Andreani. Oese won the technical program with 8,400 points, while Ferrari dominated the other three tests and was the only male individual vaulter to achieve a mark of more than nine points in the second freestyle.

Drive

Koos de Ronde with his team driving a marathon
  • 46 team drivers, 14 teams

Driving was represented at the 2014 World Equestrian Games by the four-in-hand drivers. Three drivers per nation were allowed to take part in the driving competitions with their teams, the host country also received five additional starting places. Each team consisted of four horses plus one other horse for exchange. Two or three teams formed a team with their drivers, only one team was allowed per nation.

The four-in-hand drivers contested three sub-tests as part of the World Equestrian Games: driving dressage, marathon driving and obstacle driving. Two drivers per team were rated, but the deletion result in the individual sub-tests could come from different drivers. The results of the partial tests were added up so that the team medals were awarded on the basis of this evaluation. The individual evaluation was also formed by adding up the results of the partial tests.

media

Eurosport reported on the competitions across Europe , often as a recording from the previous day. In Germany, Das Erste and ZDF broadcast reports on the decisions in show jumping as well as cross-country riding and jumping in eventing. Under the leadership of NDR , the dressage competitions were broadcast live as a live stream at sportschau.de, while the individual final qualification was broadcast exclusively on the Internet by ZDF. In Switzerland, SRF showed two and SRF info competitions in show jumping. The team decision, individual final qualification, the final of the best four riders were shown for a total of more than five hours.

At the end of July, two weeks later, the German Equestrian Association (FN) presented the Internet portal ClipMyHorse.TV as the official media partner TV. The IPTV broadcaster has been partially owned by Deutsche Reitsport Vermarktungs GmbH since summer 2014, and the FN is one of its shareholders. On ClipMyHorse.TV, viewers in Germany were given the opportunity to watch all jumping, dressage, vaulting and eventing competitions (if they were not shown live on German television), the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony of the World Equestrian Games.

additional

The main sponsor of the World Equestrian Games was, like four years earlier in Lexington, Alltech . Based in Nicholasville, Kentucky, the company is active in the animal health and nutrition sector. The Alltech Music Festival, which took place as part of the World Equestrian Games, was also sponsored by Alltech. Musicians such as Kool & The Gang , Casseurs Flowters and Aloe Blacc performed in the evenings on tournament days in the Zénith and in the exhibition halls, both of which were the venues for the World Equestrian Games.

Shortly before the World Equestrian Games began, a lawsuit was brought before the Belgian Sports Court. The show jumper Constant van Paesschen sued the Belgian Equestrian Federation because it had not nominated him. The court agreed that he was right, but the federation did not nominate him because he would have had to withdraw the nomination of another Belgian show jumper.
