McLain Ward (born October 17, 1975 in Brewster, New York ) is an American show jumper.

Career

Ward was in 1975 in Brewster on the US east coast state New York born.

He celebrated early successes as a show jumper. In 1990, at the age of 14, he won both the USET (United States Equestrian Team Foundation) medal finals and the USET Talent Derby. This made him the youngest rider to win both titles. Further successes followed in the next few years. After switching to Grand Prix show jumping, he was named "Rider of Year" by the American Grand Prix Association in 2002. That year he also won the US show jumping championship.

Ward is also considered to be the rider who broke the US $ 1,000,000 mark at a young age.

After participating in several World Cup finals, he took part in an international championship for the first time in 2004. With Sapphire he took part in the Olympic Games in Athens as part of the US team. Here the US team achieved the gold medal after the disqualification of the Ludger Beerbaum / Goldfever couple . The team repeated this success, again with the participation of Ward and Sapphire at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing / Hong Kong. Two years earlier Ward won the team silver medal with Sapphire as part of the US team at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen . In 2009 Ward and Sapphire also finished second in the show jumping World Cup finals .

His two outstanding Grand Prix wins are the $ 1,000,000 Spruce Meadows 2009 and Saugerties 2010 Grand Prix wins , both with Sapphire . At the 2013 World Cup finals , he came in fifth with Super Trooper de Ness .

He got his first individual title at an international championship in 2015 when he won individual gold with Rothchild at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. With the team, he also got bronze here.

In the following year he was part of the US team with Azur at the 2016 Olympic Games , which won the silver medal and finished ninth in the individual standings. When the World Cup final in 2017 in Omaha Ward was just as with Azur at the start. With four flawless rounds and the (co-) victory in all three partial tests, he dominated the tournament and won the World Cup final for the first time. In the April world rankings published after the World Cup final, McLain Ward made it to first place.

At Ward's fourth participation in the World Equestrian Games, 2018 in Tryon , he just missed an individual medal in the individual competition with the mare Clinta . With the team he won the gold medal there for the first time at world championships.

Family background

McLain Ward is the son of the former show jumper and horse dealer Barney Ward, who also competed for the United States of America. This became known as a participant in the " horse killer scandal " (see also under "web links"). Barney Ward was serving a nearly three-year prison term for allegedly breaking or arranging deaths for at least four horses to collect insurance funds. He was also banned from entering horse shows in the United States for life.

Disqualifications and suspensions

For the first time in 1998 McLain Ward came into conflict with the International Equestrian Federation FEI . At the 1998 World Cup final in Gothenburg, he evaded gait control and then claimed that his horse had no gaiters. Although this was refuted by video evidence, he was not punished for this.

A little more than a year later, on the second day of the CHIO Aachen 1999 tournament , he was disqualified after checking the gaiters. During the inspection of Bennetton , McLain Ward's horse, the responsible chief steward fell into their hands with sharp plastic particles when removing the gaiters. These were wrapped in the gaiters of the front legs and thus had an effect comparable to that of a blister . Ward denied knowing about this and took both himself and his caregiver to a polygraph test. Even so, he was banned from the FEI for eight months. The organizer of the CHIO also imposed a lifelong starting ban on McLain Ward, which was however lifted in 2004 after Ward repeatedly apologized.

It hit the headlines again in early 2010. At the 2010 World Cup finals in Geneva he was in the lead with Sapphire after two of three partial tests. Between the first two sub-tests, Sapphire was selected as one of the horses that had to undergo a doping and thermographic test. Three FEI veterinarians found that Sapphire's left foreleg reacted overly and presumably felt pain. After the participation of the tournament judges, which could only take place after the second partial examination, Sapphire was found to be unfit and excluded from further competition. In addition, Sapphire was subsequently disqualified from the second partial test. Ward himself was not disqualified, however, as there was no evidence of misconduct on the part of the rider - which remained so even after the doping tests were evaluated. He saw himself as a "cheap victim" (Ward: "I know, I have a personal and family history") and tried to convince the other riders to boycott the further course of the tournament, which did not succeed. In protest, he only rode the first three jumps of the course in the Grand Prix of the supporting program. After the rider announced that he would take legal action, the FEI checked the decision again. It was decided that the retroactive disqualification of the second part of the test was not permitted. Ward were awarded the prize money and world ranking points from this test again. The disqualification of Sapphire with regard to the third partial test of the World Cup final remained. As a result of this decision, the rider refrained from bringing an action.
