Brewster (formerly Brewster's Station or Brewsters Station ) is a place in Putnam County in the US state of New York . The Village belongs to the Town Southeast . In 2000 Brewster had 2,162 residents. The village with the ZIP code 10509 is named after the farmers Walter and James Brewster, who owned land here when it was founded. It is the most densely populated locality within Southeast.

In 1864 Gail Borden built a dairy farm on the Croton River , the river that runs through the town. Brewster became known nationwide in the United States in the 1960s, when the creators of the ABC television series That Girl chose the location as the fictional hometown of the character Ann Marie.

The village has a train station on the Harlem Line of the Metro-North Railroad . The trains take just under an hour and a half for the 86 km to Grand Central Station . There is a motorway junction about one kilometer east of the town center . There, Interstate 684 from White Plains crosses Interstate 84 (east) , which runs in a west-east direction, and merges with New York State Route 22 .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Brewster lived in 2,162 people. The population density was 1739.1 people per km ². There were 881 housing units at an average of 708.7 per km². Brewster's population was 78.77% White , 5.37% Black or African American , 0.37% Native American , 2.31% Asian , 11.66% said they were racial , and 1.53% named two or more races. 32.10% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Brewster were distributed to 840 households out of which 26.5% were living in children under 18 years of age. 33.9% of households were married, 11.9% had a female head of household without a husband, and 47.4% were not families. 11.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.0% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.08.

The urban population was split into 20.4% minors, 11.9% 18–24 year olds, 41.4% 25–44 year olds, 16.3% 45–64 year olds and 10.0% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women there were 131.0 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 128.4 men.

The median household income in Brewster was 42,750 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 48,393 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 28,793 compared to $ 28,929 for women. The per capita income for Brewster was $ 21,865. 14.5% of the population and 9.0% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 12.4% of minors and 12.1% of those aged 65 and over.
