Laura Branigan
Laura Ann Branigan (born July 3, 1952 in Brewster , New York , † August 26, 2004 in East Quogue , New York) was an American singer , songwriter and actress . She celebrated her greatest successes in the 1980s with songs like Gloria and Self Control .
life and career
In the mid-1970s, Laura Branigan studied at the New York American Academy of Dramatic Arts . After a short time with the folk band Meadow, she worked as a background singer for Leonard Cohen in the late 1970s . After that she started her solo career.
The Grammy nominated Branigan had her greatest success in the 1980s. She shaped the pop music of that time, especially with cover versions produced for her by Jack White . Gloria , not even represented in the German charts in 1982, was originally by Umberto Tozzi , and the title Self Control , the best-selling single record in Germany in 1984, comes from the Italian Raf . Her songs were part of the score for Flashdance and Ghostbusters . In 1994 she sang a duet with David Hasselhoff for the US television series Baywatch .
Branigan also appeared as an actress, such as Mugsy's Girl in 1984 and Backstage in 1989 . In June 2002, she played Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway - Musical Love, Janis .
In 1996, Branigan's husband, Larry Kruteck, a New York attorney, died of colon cancer . She then withdrew almost completely from the music industry by 1999.
Branigan died on August 26, 2004 of a cerebral hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm at her Long Island home . Their ashes were scattered in Long Island Sound . Two months after her death, the EP Face Control , a remake of her greatest hit Self Control , was released by British singer Marc Almond together with the band Replicant as a tribute to the deceased.
