Raf (born September 29, 1959 in Margherita di Savoia , Italy ; actually Raffaele Riefoli ), initially also Raff in the German-speaking area , is an Italian singer and songwriter . He had his biggest hit ( Self Control ) in the summer of 1984. In the late 1980s, he switched to songs in Italian.

biography

Raffaele Riefoli, who grew up in Florence , moved to London in the early 1980s and began writing songs. At first he couldn't find a record company that wanted to release Self Control or Change Your Mind . Only after the song was sung by the American singer Laura Branigan and successfully placed in the charts, Raf got a recording deal and released her own version of the song. In some countries this led to both versions being in the charts at the same time. The different spelling of his stage name originated outside Italy due to the risk of confusion with the terrorist organization Red Army Faction (RAF). In the summer of 1984 Self Control took first and second place in the German and Swiss single charts at the same time : First place in the cover version by Laura Branigan, the original by Raf (f) was more successful in the discos . In the format radio version of Laura Branigan today dominates.

In a duet with Umberto Tozzi , Raf represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1987 with the song Gente di mare, written by both of them, and reached number 3. In the Swiss charts, the song rose to number 7.
