Mahmood (born Alessandro Mahmoud on September 12, 1992 in Milan ) is an Italian singer and songwriter . He won the 2019 and 2022 Sanremo Festival .

career

Mahmood is the son of a Sardinian mother and an Egyptian father. He took part in the talent show X Factor in 2012 and then worked with various music producers. Stylistically he moved in the direction of electropop , enriched with R&B and soul elements . In 2015 he was one of the two winners of the Area Sanremo preliminary round , which allowed him to compete in the newcomer category of the 2016 Sanremo Festival . There he reached fourth place in the final with Dimentica . In 2017 he collaborated with Fabri Fibra on the song Luna .

As a songwriter, he had his biggest success to date in 2018 with the summer hit Nero Bali , sung by Elodie , Michele Bravi and Guè Pequeno . In the same year he recorded the song Doppio Whiskey with Guè Pequeno . Mahmood's debut EP was released by Universal under the title Gioventù bruciata . He also took part in Sanremo Giovani with the title song , where he was able to win both the journalists' prize and one of the starting places for the Sanremo Festival 2019 . At the 2019 festival, he presented the song Soldi , also in a duet with Guè Pequeno on the fourth night, and was able to emerge victorious in the final, earning him the right to represent Italy at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest . Shortly thereafter, Mahmood officially announced that he would take part in ESC 2019. His debut album, an extended version of his first EP, was finally released at the end of February and also reached number one in the charts.

After taking part in Charlie Charles' next number one hit , Calipso , Mahmood finally entered the ESC race and took second place with Soldi . His following singles Barrio and Rapide remained successful, and he also reached the top three of the charts in 2020 with Moonlight popolare in collaboration with rapper Massimo Pericolo . In the summer of 2020, Mahmood collaborated with Sfera Ebbasta and Colombian singer Feid on the summer hit Dorado . After further singles, Mahmood's second album Ghettolimpo was finally released in 2021 , which only just missed the top of the charts.

At the Sanremo Festival 2022 , Mahmood took part alongside Blanco with the song Brividi . The duo eventually won the competition and will represent Italy at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Turin .
