Ricchi e Poveri [ˈrikːi e ˈpɔveri] ( Italian for "rich and poor") is an Italian pop group that was founded in 1967 in Genoa . After her breakthrough in Italy, she took part in the Gran Prix Eurovision in 1978 and was also successful in German-speaking countries in the 1980s. Well-known hits include Sarà perché ti amo , Mamma Maria , Voulez-vous danser and Che sarà . With Se m'innamoro , the group won the Sanremo Festival in 1985 .

history

The group was founded in 1967 as FAMA Medium by Franco Gatti (* 1945 in Genoa), Angela Brambati (* 1947 in Mignanego ), Angelo Sotgiu (* 1946 in Trinità d'Agultu ) and Marina Occhiena (* 1950 in Genoa), after Model of The Mamas and the Papas . Sotgiu and Gatti previously belonged to the Jets group . During an audition in Milan, the group was discovered by Franco Califano , who suggested the final name Ricchi e Poveri and renewed the overall concept of the group.

Ricchi e Poveri made her debut at the Cantagiro music competition in 1968 with L'ultimo amore . In 1970 she reached second place at the Sanremo Festival with her song La prima cosa bella together with Nicola Di Bari . Her debut album was then released. Ricchi e Poveri also took second place at the Sanremo Festival in 1971 with Che sarà (presented together with José Feliciano ). The group took part in the festival again in 1972 , 1973 and 1976 , but with decreasing success. During these years she also regularly released singles and albums and made frequent appearances, both on stage and on television. In 1978 Ricchi e Poveri represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest with Questo amore and reached twelfth place.

After the album La stagione dell'amore (1980) Marina Occhiena left the group. Now as a trio, Ricchi e Poveri returned to Sanremo in 1981 and achieved fifth place in the competition with Sarà perché ti amo . The single was her greatest success up to then, which made her known far beyond Italy. In the next few years further national and international successes followed with songs like Mamma Maria , Voulez-vous danser or Ciao Italy, ciao amore . In 1985 the group finally won the Sanremo Festival with Se m'innamoro on the seventh attempt . She then returned to the festival five more times ( 1987 , 1988 , 1989 , 1990 and 1992 ).

While the group's success in Italy diminished sharply from the 1990s and they finally largely disappeared from the stage, despite occasional publications, their popularity abroad, especially in Eastern Europe , remained unbroken. In 2004 she took part in the reality show Music Farm in Italy , which enabled her to enter the charts again in her home country with a remix of her greatest hit, Sarà perché ti amo . It was not until 2012 that Ricchi e Poveri released a new album with Perdutamente amore . In 2016, Franco Gatti temporarily left the group.

At the Sanremo Festival 2020 , the group announced their reunion with the original line-up and received a special prize for their life's work.
