The 40th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1990 from February 28 to March 3 in the Palafiori near Sanremo and was moderated by Johnny Dorelli and Gabriella Carlucci .

procedure

On the occasion of the 40th edition, Adriano Aragozzini , artistic director of the festival for the second time, introduced major innovations. Following the example of the late 1960s, the 20 participants in the main category were given international musicians who presented the festival contributions in a second version. In contrast to the earlier model, the second version was run out of competition. The orchestra also returned, so all performances were fully live again. As an exception, this year the festival did not take place in the city center, but a few kilometers outside in the so-called Palafiori , which was built as part of the new flower market in Sanremo. Gabriella Carlucci returned after two years as a presenter, this time alongside two-time Sanremo winner Johnny Dorelli . The five evenings of the previous year have been reduced to four for the time being (it was not until 1995 that it finally became five evenings). The voting system using Totip betting slips was abolished, so that the result in both categories was again entirely in the hands of juries.

In the newcomer category, 16 participants entered the race, ten of whom reached the final on the third evening; the 20 Campioni, however, all made it straight to the final. The favorite role this year fell clearly to Pooh , the most successful band in Italy, which had never participated in the Sanremo Festival since its formation in 1966, and presented Uomini soli (Angel of the Night) together with Dee Dee Bridgewater . Toto Cutugno with Gli amori , who was already at his tenth participation, was also very positive ; he benefited especially from the combination with Ray Charles , who interpreted the song in the English version of Good Love Gone Bad . The duo of Amedeo Minghi and Mietta was also very popular with the romantic ballad Vattene amore (the English version All for the Love was interpreted by Nikka Costa ). The return of the “divas” Caterina Caselli and Milva (with Miriam Makeba and Sandie Shaw ) was rated as rather disappointing . Patty Pravo was also supposed to take part but withdrew at the last moment and was replaced by Anna Oxa (with Kaoma ).

Marco Masini won the newcomers with Disperato , and he was also able to secure the critics' award . As expected, Pooh emerged from the final evening as the winner ahead of Toto Cutugno and Amedeo Minghi and Mietta (the placements of the remaining entries were not announced). The Critics' Prize in the main category went to Mia Martini for the second time in a row (and for the third time in total) , who presented the song La nevicata del '56 (La nevada) with Mijares .

successes

Ten songs from the main category then reached the top 25 of the Italian single charts, as well as three second versions and the winning title in the newcomer category. The third-placed Vattene amore was the most successful , closely followed by the winning title Uomini soli .

As a Sanremo winner, Pooh was also offered to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1990 in Zagreb, which the band refused. Toto Cutugno moved up with the song Insieme: in 1992 , Italy won the second European competition.
