The third edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1953 from January 29th to 31st at the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Nunzio Filogamo .

Innovations and procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

The increasing popularity of the event led to several innovations in 1953: The competition only began on Thursday, so that the final could be held on a Saturday; the public area no longer served as a dining room; the previous Orchestra Italiana by Cinico Angelini was joined by the jazz-oriented orchestra Eclipse by Armando Trovajoli and it became the rule that each participating song was performed in two different versions (two performers, two orchestras, two arrangements); in addition, the number of singers rose to ten (seven newcomers in addition to Nilla Pizzi , Achille Togliani and Gino Latilla ). Similar music festivals began to be initiated in other places in Italy, the attention of the press grew, and the RAI improved the financing of the Sanremo Festival accordingly.

The ten songs (or twenty appearances) that were performed on the first two evenings were evaluated by a large jury, which was divided between the auditorium and the radio audience. As usual, five songs made it into the final, during which the song Viale d'autunno , which was interpreted once by Carla Boni and once by Flo Sandon’s , was chosen as the winner.
