The 59th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 2009 from February 17th to 21st at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Paolo Bonolis with Luca Laurenti and other changing co-presenters.

procedure

Moderator Paolo Bonolis
Winner Marco Carta

After the disappointing 2008 festival, the Rai called back Paolo Bonolis for the 2009 festival , who, as in 2005, took over the artistic direction together with Gianmarco Mazzi . He brought in Luca Laurenti for the moderation , and he was accompanied by different comoders every evening, including Maria De Filippi on the final evening . Bonolis reintroduced eliminations in the main category, with 10 of 16 entries reaching the final. In the case of the newcomers, however, all ten entries reached the small final. In the final, only the votes of the television audience via televoting counted , before a demoscopic jury and a jury made up of members of the festival orchestra also voted.

Among the few new names in the field were the pop-rap group Gemelli DiVersi , the rock band Afterhours and the Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour . In addition, two graduates from the last season of the casting show Amici di Maria De Filippi took part: Karima among the newcomers and winner Marco Carta in the main category. Povia , the 2006 Sanremo winner, who this time entered the race with the song Luca era gay , was a topic of conversation ; he was heavily criticized for possible homophobia . The guest list included 2009 a. a. Roberto Benigni , Kevin Spacey , Katy Perry , Premiata Forneria Marconi and Hugh Hefner .

In the newcomer category, Arisa was able to prevail with Sincerità , which also received the critic's award. In the main category, Marco Carta won the televoting with La forza mia , in front of his “discoverer” Maria De Filippi. In second and third place followed Povia and Sal Da Vinci (Non riesco a farti innamorare) , the critic's award went to Afterhours with Il paese è reale . The victory of the casting show winner Cartas through the pure televoting caused a lot of criticism of the voting system, but the festival was otherwise a success.
