The 42nd edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1992 from February 26th to 29th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Pippo Baudo with Alba Parietti , Brigitte Nielsen and Milly Carlucci .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

For the first time this year, the public service broadcaster Rai took over the organization of the festival itself, with the implementation being delegated to Adriano Aragozzini (OAI) and Carlo Bixio and Marco Ravera (Publispei). Both the final list of participants and moderators were only announced at the last moment. After five years, Pippo Baudo returned to Sanremo as a presenter, with Milly Carlucci , Alba Parietti and Brigitte Nielsen appearing at his side . At the additional talk show Dopofestival , Baudo moderated together with Sandro Ciotti , Vincenzo Mollica , Luciano De Crescenzo and Gianni Ippoliti .

The rules of the competition were fundamentally changed: not all 24 entries in the main category automatically made it to the finals; instead, three were eliminated on the first three evenings. Big names like Ricchi e Poveri , Mino Reitano or Giorgio Faletti and Orietta Berti also got hit . In the newcomer category, nine out of 18 entries made it to the finals. The favorite this year was Mia Martini , the three-time winner of the Critics' Prize, with the song Gli uomini non cambiano . The international guests this year were MC Hammer , Natalie Cole and Annie Lennox .

Among the newcomers, the duet by Aleandro Baldi and Francesca Alotta , Non amarmi , was particularly well received and also won the small final. In the final of the main category, Luca Barbarossa with Portami a ballare was ultimately able to prevail; the Roman singer had already participated in the festival for the fifth time. He relegated Mia Martini to second place, followed by Paolo Vallesi with La forza della vita . The critics' prizes went to the groups Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare and Aeroplanitaliani (Newcomer), both of which did not make it into the final in the competition.

successes

No song from the 1992 festival could reach the top of the Italian singles charts. A total of 14 festival entries entered the top 25 of the single charts, half of them from the newcomer and main categories. The most successful was the winning title in the newcomer category, Non amarmi , which a few years later was also successfully covered by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony .

On the other hand, Annie Lennox made it to number one in the charts after the festival.

The runner-up Mia Martini then represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1992 with the song Rapsodia and reached fourth place.
