Natalie Cole
Natalie Maria Cole (born February 6, 1950 in Los Angeles , California - † December 31, 2015 ) was an American singer , songwriter and actress . She was the daughter of jazz singers Nat King Cole and Marie Ellington . In her more than 40-year career, 13.5 million albums were sold in the United States alone, making her one of the most successful singers in the genres of R&B , soul and jazz . She received nine Grammys for her achievements as a singer .
biography
Her first album, Inseparable , was released in 1975; the following year, Cole received a Grammy for Best New Artist. In these early years she was referred to as the “New Queen of Soul” by several media, including the New York Times, following Aretha Franklin , who went through a career slump at the same time . Cole was also the second female singer to be recognized in the category, after Franklin, who won the Grammys Best Female R&B Vocal Performance eight times in a row .
Cole recorded albums in the areas of soul, jazz, pop and dance , among others . Her biggest hits include This Will Be (1975), I've Got Love on My Mind (1977), Our Love (1978), Someone That I Used to Love (1980), Jump Start and I Live for Your Love (1987 ), Pink Cadillac (1988), Miss You Like Crazy (1989) and Unforgettable (1991, a post-assembled duet with her late father). The accompanying album Unforgettable - With Love sold over seven million copies in the United States alone and received numerous Grammy awards.
Cole was married three times. All three marriages were divorced after a few years. Her only son, Robert Yancy, was born from her first marriage to Marvin Yancy (1950–85), co-producer and co-author of her first albums. He died of a heart attack a year and a half after his mother's death in August 2017 at the age of 39 .
In 2000, Cole published her autobiography Angel on My Shoulder , in which she also reported on her severe drug addiction . According to her own statements, she took LSD , heroin and crack ; After an unsuccessful rehab, she overcame her long-term drug and alcohol addiction with cold withdrawal . One of the key moments in getting her drug addiction under control was January 10, 1981 when Cole was a guest at the Las Vegas Hilton . That day a heavy fire broke out in the hotel, killing eight people. Cole was also in mortal danger for hours, but was ultimately rescued without major injuries. According to her own statement, the moment when the fire brigade rushed to the rescue and she did not want to leave because she was smoking crack was the low point in her life.
On February 17, 2007 , Cole performed as a singer at a Prince concert . In 2008, Cole was diagnosed with hepatitis C. She herself attributed the disease to the use of contaminated syringes during her heroin addiction. After the treatment , her kidneys failed and she had to undergo dialysis several times a week . In May 2009 she received a donor kidney . In 2010 her second autobiography, Love Brought Me Back - A Journey of Loss and Gain , was published, in which she processed her experiences in connection with her illness, treatment and organ transplantation .
Despite her health problems, she released a Great American Songbook Standards CD in 2008 , which won a Grammy Award the following year.
In December 2015, Cole had to cancel several planned performances due to her illness. She died of heart failure on the evening of December 31, 2015 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
