Background and story
The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position. The award for R&B performances by women was awarded parallel to the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for men and the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for groups.
This award has not been awarded since the Grammy Awards in 2012 because it was added to the Best R&B Performance category.
The prize was first awarded at the 10th Grammy Awards in 1968, after a 1967 Grammy Award for Best R&B Solo Vocal Performance, Male Or Female to Ray Charles for Crying Time . It was won by Aretha Franklin for the song Respect . Aretha Franklin received the award a total of 11 times and is thus the artist with the most frequent victories of this award, at the same time she was nominated a total of 23 times and thus the most frequently. Chaka Khan was nominated eight times, making it the second most popular nomination. The last Grammy in this category went to Fantasia Barrino in 2011 for the song Bittersweet . All award winners were from the United States.
