Anita Ward (born December 20, 1956 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American singer . In 1979 she achieved one of the most defining hits of the disco era with Ring My Bell .

Life

After a degree in psychology she worked as a teacher before by the producer Frederick Knight under contract was taken. Knight offered the singer the disco song Ring My Bell , which he had originally written for Stacy Lattisaw . Ward didn't like the song or the disco genre, but he was changed and recorded Ring My Bell in 1979 . The song reached number one on the charts in both the USA and Great Britain , number three in Germany and Austria and number five in Switzerland . However, disputes with Frederick Knight and a car accident meant that Anita Ward could not continue her career successfully . Her single Don't Drop My Love was only a minor success with number 87 in the US and number 26 in the disco charts.

Knight produced two LPs with Ward. The first album Songs of Love contained the hit Ring My Bell as well as Ward's only self-made composition You Lied . Otherwise the soulful ballads dominate this work . In addition to disco numbers such as Don't Drop My Love and Cover Me, the follow-up album also mainly features ballads.

Today, Anita Ward performs at various events such as sporting events and sings her only hit, Ring My Bell . It is considered a classic one-hit wonder . The song Ring My Bell has now been covered several times, including by Tori Amos .
