The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position.
A separate Grammy Award for the Best Rap Album category was introduced in 1995 and first presented at the 37th Grammy Awards in 1996. The winner was the band Naughty by Nature . According to the category description, the award is given for albums on which at least 51% of the playing time consists of newly recorded, rapped parts. In addition to the artists, the award winners often include the producers, technicians and mixers of the awarded albums.
So far, the award has only gone to artists from the United States. No female solo artists were honored until 2011; the now disbanded band Fugees had a singer with Lauryn Hill . With six wins, Eminem has received the prize most frequently to date. Kanye West received the award four times and the duo OutKast received two awards. With eleven nominations, Jay-Z has so far been nominated most frequently (once together with Kanye West), but he could only win the award once. Missy Elliott and The Roots have each been nominated four times, but have not yet received the award.
