Thank Me Later is the debut album by the Canadian rapper Drake . It was released on June 15, 2010 under the Young Money Entertainment , Cash Money Records and Universal Motown Records labels . The recordings took place in various recording studios from 2009 to 2010. It was mostly produced by producers Noah "40" Shebib and Boi-1da, but also by Timbaland , Swizz Beatz , Nicki Minaj , Lil Wayne , The-Dream and Kanye West .

The time for the production of Thank Me Later was very tight, nevertheless the album received positive reviews from many critics, in which they praised the lyrics of the songs, which included topics such as fame, self-examination and love, and it already received works and albums from rappers like Kanye West and Kid Cudi compared. In the first week, the album sold 447,000 copies and landed at number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts in the USA . In Canada, the album went platinum the first week after its release, and it was also awarded platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America . Thank Me Later contains four singles, which include the international hit Find Your Love and the three Billboard hits Over , Miss Me and Fancy . The album sold 1,551,000 times in the United States by February 2012.

background

The mixtape So Far Gone , released in February 2009, continued his series of mixtapes and brought him an unexpected critical and commercial success. He was nominated for two Grammy Awards and produced the hit single Best I Ever Had , which can be heard on his EP So Far Gone and his mixtape So Far Gone . The single came out after an advertising competition between different labels and its signing with Universal Motown Records with the support of the successful rappers Kanye West , Jay-Z and Lil Wayne . After the success of So Far Gone there was a lot of hype about him and many guest appearances on songs by other rappers followed.

In an interview for Complex magazine , Drake said that Thank Me Later will be "a solid hip hop album," which is musically different from So Far Gone , and that it has been compared to Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak album . He expressed a desire to work with André 3000 , Kid Cudi and Sade for the album. In an interview for MTV he said that André 3000 and Nas were influences on a few parts of Thank Me Later : “Nas was somebody that I used to listen to his raps and never understood how he did it. I always wanted to understand how he painted those pictures and his bar structure. I went back and really studied Nas and André 3000 and then came back with this album ". When comparing Thank Me Later with his previous work, Drake said: “It's gonna be bigger, it's gonna sound happier. More victorious, 'cause that's where I'm at in my life'. He told Entertainment Weekly , “I didn't make this album for commercial purposes. A lot of the verses are extremely long. I just made it to share with people. I hope they can enjoy ”.

Producers Noah "40" Shebib and Boi-1da handled most of the programming of the tracks and instrumentation. In addition to Drake's production team in Toronto, he also worked with German producer Crada , who also worked on Kid Cudi's debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day . Drake told Entertainment Weekly that he had also worked with the indie pop band Francis and the Lights . Kevin Rudolf also worked on the album by playing the keyboard on Show Me A Good Time and Find Your Love . R&B singer Mary J. Blige also collaborated on the album by adding extra vocals to the song Fancy . In March 2010, Drake confirmed that along with Eminem and Dr. Dre had recorded a song. In early November 2009, Lil Wayne announced that Drake had completed his album, although Drake said he was still working on the album. On April 26, 2010, Drake announced in front of a crowd that he had finished recording and made the final copy of the album.
