The song, composed in four-four time and in D minor , has a tempo of 66–69 beats per minute . The chord progression is Bbmaj7-Am7, the vocal range extends from F3 to D5. Hotline Bling was originally supposed to be a remix of DRAM's song Cha Cha . Musically, the song is based on a sample of Timmy Thomas' song Why Can't We Life Together , which is why Thomas is also listed as the author of Hotline Bling . In terms of content, Drake complains about his ex-girlfriend, who, in his opinion, has changed.

Reviews

Hotline Bling received mostly positive reviews. For Felix Heinecker from Plattentests.de “the song begins with a sparse beat, synth flickering. The underlying melody of the song unfolds little by little ”. Allmusic's Tim Sendra describes Hotline Bling as a "great catchy hit song". Pitchfork thinks that while the lyrics are typical of Drake, the beat and music are "great". In summary, the song sounds "like a candlelight dinner in the attic".
