American Music Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Music Awards (AMA) are among the most important US music awards. They are awarded annually in November; the event will be broadcast by ABC .

The American Music Awards were launched in 1973 by presenter Dick Clark as a competition to the Grammy . While the Grammy award winners are determined by members of the entertainment industry, the AMA awards the record buyers.

At the first award in 1974, alongside Rodney Allen Rippy and Ricky Segall, singers Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond were present as co-presenters.

Other award winners

In 1996 a new category was created for Favorite Artist of the Year . The first winner was Garth Brooks , who turned down the award because he had done nothing that year to deserve the award. The category was then discontinued. Although the award mainly goes to American artists, other internationally successful singers and bands such as Elton John , Celine Dion , George Michael and Spice Girls have also received the award.

Most of the awards for a male solo artist went to Michael Jackson at 26, including the Artist of the Century, and the most awards for women went to Taylor Swift with 23 . The country band Alabama received the most awards for a group with 23 pieces including the Award of Merit . Most of the AMAs in one year, namely eight, went to Michael Jackson in 1983 for his album Thriller and in 1993 to Whitney Houston for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard .
