Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow (born June 17, 1943 in Brooklyn , New York ; born Barry Alan Pincus ) is an American singer . With over 80 million singles and albums sold, he is one of the most successful interpreters of pop songs and ballads in adult contemporary music , especially in the United States .
Life
Barry Manilow was born Barry Alan Pincus in Brooklyn, New York. When he was two years old, his father left the family; Barry got his mother's maiden name, Edna Manilow, as a new surname. He learned to play the piano at an early age. In 1964 he married Susan Dreixler, with whom he was married for a year. He later became the pianist and arranger in Bette Midler's band . Together, Midler and Manilow had their first successes with stage shows in nightclubs in New York . Manilow also produced Bette Midler's first album in 1972.
The success with Bette Midler ensured that Barry Manilow could release his first solo album in 1973. In 1974 he had his first world hit with the song Mandy . The song was from Scott English and was originally called Brandy ; thus began Manilow's worldwide career as one of the most successful singers in show business . Mandy was the first of three number one hits in the US charts and the first of thirteen top hits in the adult contemporary charts and the first of five million-seller. Manilow sold 23 million records in five years.
From 1979 he began an artistic collaboration with Dionne Warwick , for which he produced the album Dionne with the hit I'll Never Love This Way Again , which won a Grammy . In 1984 and 1985 there was another collaboration with Dionne Warwick with the duet Run to Me, composed by the Bee Gees , and the album Finder of Lost Loves .
Manilow's record sales declined in the 1980s, but in 1984 he performed ten evenings at the sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York and played the musically highly acclaimed album 2:00 AM Paradise with greats of jazz music such as Sarah Vaughan and Mel Tormé Cafe one.
From 1989 Manilow moved with his show Live on Broadway on a successful mammoth tour around the world. In the 1990s he continued this concert career with the tour Showstoppers (a revue of famous musicals - tunes ) continued and stepped into the big shows in Las Vegas on.
His musical studio work has been dominated by concept albums with cover versions since 1991 . Showstoppers (1991) contains musical, Singin 'with the Big Bands (1994) big band classics. In 1996 he interpreted hits of 1978 ( Summer of '78 ), 1998 songs by Frank Sinatra ( Manilow Sings Sinatra ). On at Here the Mayflower (2001) and Manilow Scores (2004), contained what original compositions, followed by four decade specific albums: The Greatest Songs of the Fifties (2006), The Greatest Songs of the Sixties (2006), The Greatest Songs of the Seventies (2007) and The Greatest Songs of the Eighties (2008). After another album with cover versions - The Greatest Love Songs of All Time (2010) - Manilow put on 15 minutes - Fame… Can You Take It? In 2011 another album with original compositions, which dealt with the phenomenon of 15 minutes of fame . My Dream Duets (2014) includes duets with late artists such as Whitney Houston , Dusty Springfield and Marilyn Monroe . The album This Is My Town - Songs of New York , released in 2017 , deals with Manilow's birthplace and contains both cover versions and new songs.
In 1993 he sang the Inauguration of Bill Clinton in front of 16,000 politicians from around the world Let Freedom Ring . His musicals were also great successes: Copacabana premiered in London in 1994 , and Harmony started in 1997 (about the fate of the Comedian Harmonists ) in San Diego, California .
Manilow has had recurring health problems since 2003. In 2003 he accidentally bumped into a wall at his Palm Springs home . In February 2004, he was hospitalized with severe pain caused by stress . On August 8, 2006, it was announced that he would have a hip replacement surgery.
In September 2007 Manilow canceled an appearance on the US television show The View , which is moderated by Elisabeth Hasselbeck . The reason for the cancellation was the moderator's approving stance on the Iraq war .
From February 23, 2005 to December 30, 2009, Manilow performed five shows a week at the Las Vegas Hilton . From March 2010 he was back on stage in Las Vegas, but this time at the Paris Hotel & Casino .
Manilow has been married to his longtime manager and life partner Garry Kief since 2014. He had already met Kief in 1978, but kept the relationship a secret for years so as not to disappoint his fans. In 2017 he came out .
