Dionne Warwick, 1997

Marie Dionne Warwick (* 12. December 1940 in East Orange , New Jersey ) is an American singer and television presenter .

According to Rolling Stone magazine, she is the “pioneer chanteuse of black middle-of-the-road pop ” and is particularly famous as a muse and interpreter of the compositions of Burt Bacharach and Hal David . She is the sister of Dee Dee Warwick , a niece of Cissy Houston and a cousin of Whitney Houston .

Life

Dionne Warwick grew up in a family characterized by gospel music and sang with her sister Dee Dee, her mother Lee Drinkard and her sister Emily Drinkard, who later became Cissy Houston, in the gospel choir The Drinkard Singers . In a panel session, the Drifters , in Warwick as a background singer participated, was Burt Bacharach attention to the velvety voice of the singer. From 1962 he wrote numerous hits for her with his regular lyricist Hal David, some of which belong to the Great American Songbook . Don't Make Me Over was the name of the first single, which reached the American charts at number 12 in 1963. Warwick stayed with the label Scepter , on which it was recorded, until 1971.

From 1963 to 1972 she primarily recorded Burt Bacharach / Hal David compositions and landed her greatest hits with titles such as Anyone Who Had a Heart , Walk On By , Reach Out for Me (1964), Message to Michael , Trains and Boats and Planes , I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself (1966), Alfie , The Windows of The World , I Say a Little Prayer (1967), (Theme From) Valley of the Dolls (highest solo ranking for Warwick in the United States, 2nd place), Do You Know the Way to San José , Promises, Promises (1968), This Girl's in Love with You , You've Lost That Lovin 'Feeling (1969), I'll Never Fall in Love Again and Paper Maché (1970). With (Theme From) Valley of the Dolls , she had the highest solo placement in the United States with No. 2. From 1968 to 1970 she won two Grammy Awards for best female pop voice of the year for her vocal performance .

In 1968, The Magic of Believing, a little-noticed gospel album, was created. Another followed 40 years later with Why We Sing .

On astrological advice, Dionne Warwick appended an allegedly lucky "e" to her surname for three years from 1971. In 1972 she moved from the small label Scepter to Warner Records for a record fee - she received the hitherto most highly valued recording contract with a singer in the United States . However, after their previous hit suppliers Bacharach / David had split up, Warwick was initially only able to book smaller single hits. Even a collaboration with the Motown hit team Holland-Dozier-Holland ( The Supremes ) was unable to get the singer back on the road to success. It was more or less by chance that she achieved a surprising number one hit in the United States in 1974 with the duo recording Then Came You (on Atlantic Records ) with the Detroit soul band The Spinners . She also recorded a successful live double album with soul star Isaac Hayes . Nevertheless, it was not enough for a sustained comeback .

Only the collaboration with Barry Manilow in 1979 and another change of record company to Arista Records brought new successes. I'll Never Love This Way Again , a title that already a year earlier of three angel-for-Charlie actress Cheryl Ladd was taken up, reached No. 5 on the US charts and was awarded the Grammy for best female pop -Vocal performance excellent. She received another one for the follow-up hit Déjà-vu , but for the best R&B performance . She was the first singer ever to win a Grammy in both categories in one year. In 1980 she led the adult contemporary charts with No Night so Long .

From 1980 to 1981, she accepted the offer to host the popular American television pop show Solid Gold . She left the show unwilling to co- host with country singer Tanya Tucker , but returned to the show between 1984 and 1986. In 1982 she went into the studio with Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees . The result was the globally successful album Heartbreaker with the top hit of the same name . She had a successful collaboration with Luther Vandross in 1983 with the title How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye and in 1984 with Stevie Wonder for The Woman In Red .

1985 sang Warwick in multi-Star charity We Are the World and took four weeks number one in the US charts with a cover version of the earlier of Rod Stewart recorded for a quickly forgotten movie soundtrack Burt Bacharach -title That's What Friends Are For . The million-dollar proceeds from the world hit went to the American AIDS relief organization amfAR , founded by Elizabeth Taylor , which was able to finance its entire budget for the first two years of its existence.

Over the years Warwick has been committed to this institution and has received several awards for its charitable work. Their hit time seemed to be over in 1987 after the successful duet Love Power with Jeffrey Osborne and number 12 in the United States.

An album with Cole Porter titles in 1990, her reunion with Bacharach and David in 1993, Sunny Weather Lover from the album Friends Can Be Lovers , Bossa Nova recordings in 1994 on the album Aquarela Do Brasil and a duet with Dieter Bohlen project Blue System (It's All Over) did not achieve the desired sales, even if the last-mentioned title found itself in the lower regions of the German single charts for a few weeks. In 1998 she re-recorded many of her old classics in a new guise for the album Dionne Sings Dionne . So she reached Although eleven years after their last hit again the singles chart, but came up with a hip-hop version of What the World Needs Now Is Love with various rap and hip-hop artists such as - Bobby Brown and Coolio not Place 87 out.

In addition, the artist made more and more negative headlines. The Psychic Friends Network , for which she appeared as a presenter and in advertising, went bankrupt and scratched the singer's reputation. In 2002, she was briefly detained in Miami by the US drug search with eleven marijuana cigarettes. Supposedly these were only as agent against glaucoma thought.

Dionne Warwick, 2003

In 2004 four major divas concerts with Warwick, Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole were announced. Due to the highly overestimated demand by the organizer, the events had to move from the planned stadiums, e.g. B. in the "Arena auf Schalke", in - but then sold out - halls such as the Olympic Hall in Munich. The event at the Brandenburg Gate , which was planned as the first, was canceled by the organizer Tchibo .

Warwick lived temporarily in Bahia (Brazil) until 2005 , where she owned a house. For this reason, Warwick usually sings a potpourri of Brazilian compositions in their concerts.

In February 2020, Warwick took part as Mouse in the third season of the US offshoot of The Masked Singer and finished 14th out of a total of 18 places.
