Cissy Houston

Cissy Houston (* the thirtieth September 1933 as Emily Drinkard in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American Gospel - and Soul singer. She is the mother of Whitney Houston and the aunt of Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick .

Career

Cissy Houston began singing in church as a young girl. She was also a member of The Drinkard Singers , a gospel group made up of family members, when she was young . Between 1967 and 1969 she was a member of the girl group Sweet Inspirations , with which she played hits like Let It Be Me , Why (Am I Treated So Bad, 1967), Sweet Inspiration , To Love Somebody , Unchained Melody (1968) and Crying in the Rain (1969) had. The Sweet Inspirations were popular background singers for Elvis Presley , Aretha Franklin , Jimi Hendrix , George Benson and Dusty Springfield . Houston then embarked on a moderately successful solo career in which she landed smaller hits like Be My Baby (1971). She also sang on the albums Burt Bacharach (1971) and Living Together (1973) by Burt Bacharach .

In the late 1970s, a number of records that belong to the disco genre were released and were mainly produced by Michael Zager . After a few quieter years, she and her daughter recorded the duet I Know Him So Well for their album Whitney in 1987 . The ballad was released as a single in Germany and the Netherlands, among others, and also made it into the charts there (number 46 and 16 respectively).

In 1996, Houston had a small role in the movie Rendezvous with an Angel alongside her daughter Whitney . A year later she was also awarded a Grammy for the gospel album Face to Face , the follow-up work He Leadeth Me also received this award. Her autobiography How Sweet the Sound: My Life with God and Gospel was published in 1998 . Whitney had written the preface to it.

Private

Gary Garland is the son of her marriage to Freddie Garland in 1954. In 1959 she married John Russell Houston (1920–2003), with whom she has two children: Michael and Whitney (1963–2012).
