Chuck Jackson (born July 22, 1937 in Latta ) is an American rhythm and blues and soul singer.

Life

Chuck Jackson grew up in Pittsburgh and later studied at South Carolina State College, but he dropped out to become a musician. Between 1957 and 1959 he was a member of the Del Vikings group . After he left the Del Vikings, Luther Dixon discovered him. Jackson signed a recording deal with Scepter Records . His first single, I Don't Want to Cry , reached number 36 on the US charts in 1961. His collaboration with Burt Bacharach in those years was remarkable , who provided Jackson with three original compositions: I Wake Up Crying , The Breaking Point (1961) and Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird) (1962). Any Day Now was at # 23 and # 2, Jackson's biggest hit in the pop and R&B charts. The song gained further fame as the b-side of In the Ghetto (1969) by Elvis Presley and the only Bacharach composition that the "King" ever recorded. The country pop cover by Ronnie Milsap in 1982 was even better known and more successful , number 14 in the USA and number one on the R&B and adult contemporary charts.

Jackson stayed on the R&B charts until 1980, but often changed record labels. From 1961 on, he had a total of 23 hits in the R&B hit lists. With I Do not Want to Cry (1961) and Something You Got (1965) were two other top 10 successes there. In 1967 he had two hits in a duet with Maxine Brown . In 1968 he was under contract for a short time with the Motown label . Two albums were created here. His last minor hit, I Wanna Give You Some Love (1980), was written by Bob Marley .

In the late 1970s, Jackson, like countless other aging soul stars, tried to make a comeback with disco music , but was unable to assert himself in either the R&B or disco charts. Singles like When the Fuel Runs Out (1979) or Waiting in Vain (1980) didn't bring the hoped-for restart.

In 1992 Jackson recorded an album with Cissy Houston , the mother of Whitney Houston . His 1998 album I'll Never Get Over You contains a duet with Dionne Warwick .

In 2015 Jackson was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.

Jackson is a cousin of soul singer Ann Sexton .
