Ronnie Milsap
Ronnie Lee Milsap (born January 16, 1943 in Robbinsville , North Carolina ) is an American country and pop singer who, with 34 No. 1 hits in the country charts, was one of the most successful crossover artists of the 1970s and 1980s was.
biography
Childhood and youth
By a glaucoma born blind Milsap was brought up by the early divorce of his parents father and grandparents. His musical talent was already noticed as a child, and he received training in classical music. But his real interest was country music and later rock 'n' roll . He founded his first band while still at school. Thanks to good reports, he received a college scholarship, but gave up in favor of a career as a musician.
First successes
Milsap's entry into the music scene came as a member of JJ Cale's band . A little later he formed his own group that played a mixture of country and blues and had a smaller hit with Never Had It So Good at the end of the sixties . In 1969 he moved with his band to Memphis , where he worked as a studio musician. Among other things, he worked on recordings of Elvis Presley . He also made regular appearances in a local club. In 1970 he was able to place himself in the pop hit parade with Loving You Is a Natural Thing . His first album was released a year later.
Career
In 1973 Milsap moved to Nashville , the heart of country music. Here he was looked after by the manager Charley Prides , Jack D. Johnson. In the same year he received a record deal from RCA. His first single, I Hate You , made it into the top ten of the country charts. In the following year, he had three consecutive number 1 hits.
It was the time when country music was dominated by mainstream and pop sounds, and so Milsap's pleasing music, which combines country and soul music , became popular with the general public. He created an almost unprecedented series of 40 number 1 hits, some of which also made it onto the pop charts. Five of his albums achieved gold status and he won six Grammys for best country singer and was named CMA Entertainer of the Year .
In 1988, Milsap had to undergo vocal cord surgery, which was without complications. Its sales gradually decreased. The neo-traditionalists now set the tone in country music . Ronnie Milsap oriented increasingly towards pop music; his arrangements became fuller. In 1990, his two greatest hits albums went platinum. After a few flops, he switched to Liberty Records in 1992, but here, too, he could no longer build on his earlier successes.
Milsap continues to tour as a live artist. He has been a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame since 2014 , which opened the exhibition Ronnie Milsap: A Legend in My Time the following year . Also in 2014 was the RCA Albums Collection, a comprehensive 21 CD retrospective of his albums for the RCA label .
