Charley Pride
Charley Frank Pride (born March 18, 1934 in Sledge , Mississippi , † December 12, 2020 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American country singer . The three-time Grammy winner was one of the most successful country artists of all time , with 29 number one hits on the Billboard country charts, and by far the most successful black singer in the genre. According to the awards, he sold more than five million records in the United States alone. His biggest hit Kiss on Angel Good Mornin ' received a gold award and was also successful in the pop charts.
Childhood and youth
Pride grew up in a large southern family with many children . In his earliest youth he worked as a cotton picker. When he was 14 he bought a guitar with his wages. Unlike his ethnic background, he was not drawn to blues or gospel , but to country music . But at first his main interest was baseball . He played for the Detroit Eagles and the Memphis Red Sox ; but it was not enough for a professional career. Pride spent two years in the army, married, and made a living as a simple worker.
Career
In 1963 he got the chance to play the established country musicians Red Sovine and Red Foley . They were impressed and put him in touch with him for the first time in Nashville . At first it was not easy to gain a foothold in the country scene there. With the support of producer Jack Clement , a demo tape was created that eventually ended up in the hands of Chet Atkins , the boss of the RCA record division. Atkins immediately signed Pride. In 1966 the first single was produced, The Snake Crawls at Night . The record company waived the usual promotion. You weren't sure how the radio stations hit youblack country singers would react.
In the same year he achieved his breakthrough with Just Between You and Me . A year later he appeared in the Grand Ole Opry . A long series of number one hits followed, including songs like Kiss an Angel Good Mornin ' or Is Anybody Going to San Antone? Often he was able to place himself in the pop hit parades. Its success lasted until the 1980s. After falling sales and problems with the record company, he changed label in 1986. Despite a few smaller hits, he was no longer able to build on his earlier successes.
Pride was still active in old age and released his last studio album Music in My Heart in 2017 .
Pride led a scandal-free life and had three children. In 2000 he received the highest honor in country music: he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame . A year earlier he had received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
Charley Pride died in December 2020 at the age of 86 from complications from Covid-19 .
