Scepter Records

Scepter Records , often also called Scepter for short , is an American record label . It was founded in 1959 by Florence Greenberg in New York City .

Greenberg founded Scepter Records with $ 4,000 in start-up capital from the sale of her record label Tiara Records to Decca Records . Tiara Records had previously released the soul band The Shirelles' first smaller hit . After the Shirelles at Decca Records could not repeat this success, Decca Records announced them. Greenberg, who was still the manager of the Shirelles, now wanted to market the Shirelles' songs herself and founded Scepter Records for this purpose.

In 1962 the subsidiary Wand Records was founded. In the 1960s, mostly soul titles a. a. by The Isley Brothers , Dionne Warwick and BJ Thomas on Scepter, but also some blues , rock and jazz recordings by Big Bill Broonzy and Thelonious Monk or a version of Venus in Furs .

Scepter Records developed into a company with 75 employees, several gospel and classical music departments, its own record publishers and recording studios. In 1976, Scepter Records was sold to Springboard International shortly before bankruptcy with a substantial loss .
