Dusty Springfield

Dusty Springfield , OBE (born April 16, 1939 in Hampstead , London , † March 2, 1999 in Henley-on-Thames , Oxfordshire ; real name Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien ) was a British pop and soul singer . Because of her soul voice, which is very unusual for a white man, she is called "The White Queen of Soul". She is considered one of the most successful singers in Great Britain and a style icon of the 1960s.

Early years

Springfield was born in 1939 as the second child of the British Indian- born accountant and tax advisor Gerard Anthony O'Brien (1904-1979; called "OB") and his Irish-born wife Catherine Anne Ryle (1900-1974; called "Kay"). Her older brother Dion (* 1934) later became known under the stage name Tom Springfield, primarily as a composer and producer . Springfield came from a very musical family and showed an early interest in singing and musical instruments .

From 1958 to 1960 she belonged to Riss Chantelle (real name Iris Long) and Lynne Abrams under the stage name "Shan" to the girl group The Lana Sisters, which released a total of eight singles on Fontana Records , a subdivision of Philips Records . None of the singles was commercially successful. From 1960 to 1963 she belonged to her brother Tom Springfield in the folk trio The Springfields , which had some hits in England and the USA.

Breakthrough and career

On November 8, 1963, Dusty Springfield's first solo single (Philips UK single BF 1292) was released on Philips Records with I Only Want to Be with You . The single made it to number 4 on the British charts at the beginning of 1964. A number of hit singles followed: Stay Awhile 1964 (UK number 13), Wishin 'and Hopin' 1964 (US number 6), I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself 1964 (UK number 3), Losing You 1964 (UK place 9), In the Middle of Nowhere 1965 (UK place 8), Some of Your Lovin ' 1965 (UK place 8), You Don't Have to Say You Love Me 1966 (UK place 1, US place 4 ), Goin 'Back 1966 (UK 10th place), All I See Is You 1966 (UK 10th place), I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten 1968 (UK 4th place) and Son of a Preacher Man 1968 (UK 9th place, US place 10).

In 1963 and 1964, Springfield presented the first episodes of the British music program Ready Steady Go and interviewed the Beatles , among others . As part of this show, she initiated the TV special Ready Steady Go Special '65 - The Sounds of Motown in April 1965 , with which she wanted to introduce American artists from the Motown label in Great Britain. Acts performed that were already established artists in the USA but still largely unknown in Europe , including The Supremes , Martha & the Vandellas , Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder .

On December 18, 1964, Dusty Springfield in South Africa was expelled from the country after she had completed only five of a total of seven planned performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg as part of their South Africa tour. She had refused to perform in front of a racially segregated audience in accordance with the apartheid that was in force at the time .

In January 1965 she took part with some other popular singers of her time such as Connie Francis , Petula Clark , Milva , Kiki Dee , Timi Yuro and Audrey Arno with the title Di fronte all'amore (Text: Umberto Bindi ) at the Italian Sanremo Festival , did not make it to the final.

In the following years she hosted several music programs on British television, in which she presented her own songs, but also sang her favorite songs and received guests. These were Dusty ( BBC 1966/67), It Must Be Dusty ( ATV 1968) and Decidedly Dusty (BBC 1969). She was also seen in sketches and comedy appearances, e.g. B. with Des O'Connor in Messing About On the River and 1972 with Engelbert and Jonathan Winters in The Wacky World of Jonathan Winters .

Springfield's only number 1 hit was You Don't Have to Say You Love Me in April 1966, which replaced the Spencer Davis Group's single Somebody Help Me at the top of the chart. Springfield also recorded some of their titles in French , Italian and German . When performing live, she occasionally performed titles in Portuguese and Spanish .

In addition to high-ranking singles, Springfield released a number of commercially successful and artistically acclaimed albums, including A Girl Called Dusty (1964) and Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty (1965). The albums Where Am I Going? (1967) and Dusty in Memphis (1969) were commercial failures, but are now considered genre classics. There were live performances with Jimi Hendrix , Tom Jones and Engelbert . In 1969/1970 she appeared on the Liberace Show , the Andy and Williams Show and the Johnny Cash Show . She presented herself in a style that permanently shaped her image: long, elegant evening dresses, long fingernails, lots of mascara and jewelry, teased hair and sweeping, dramatic gestures.

In 1967 she recorded the title track The Look of Love for the James Bond parody Casino Royale . For this song she was nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Song" in 1968 , but lost to Talk to the Animals .

Her penchant for ballads , which has repeatedly emerged , was also expressed in the song I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten , which reached number 4 on the charts in July 1968 in her home country. But she also repeatedly recorded songs by American soul singers, such as Piece of My Heart by Erma Franklin , I Can't Hear You by Betty Everett , Oh No! Not My Baby by Maxine Brown , Doodlin by Baby Washington or Won't Be Long by Aretha Franklin . There were also versions of Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters It Was Easier to Hurt Her , Will You Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles , Mockingbird by Inez and Charlie Foxx, Wasn't Born to Follow by The Byrds (1971), the Mexican folk song La Bamba (1965), of Bacharach - David -Klassikers (They Long to Be) Close to You (1964), as well as a rendition of Richard Wagner's Tannhauser , Do not Speak of Love (1968).

Change to the USA

She was drawn to the United States again and again. She was particularly fascinated by the soul feeling of American Motown- oriented musicians, from the Supremes to Mary Wells to Dionne Warwick . As one of the few European singers, she managed without any effort to bring this musical feeling into her own interpretations. In 1968 she took in Memphis with Chips Moman one of their best albums: Dusty in Memphis contained four songs of the famous songwriting duo Carole King and Gerry Goffin , including the highly dramatic interpreted No Easy Way Down . She had even greater success with the Son of a Preacher Man , which climbed into the top ten on both sides of the Atlantic and is now a classic. The LP itself was not a success in the charts at the time - but is now repeatedly published as a CD reissue. In 1969 she stood for her LP A Brand New Me in the Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia.

The 1960s were also increasingly characterized by scandals. Springfield fought with jazz drummer Buddy Rich , displayed diva allure at press conferences, was at times addicted to alcohol and cocaine , announced her bisexuality and attempted suicide . Her private problems also increasingly affected her stage presence.

1972 Dusty Springfield settled in Los Angeles and only produced new albums sporadically. Even more than before she turned to moody ballads when she wasn't working as a background singer for other performers. In 1978, 1979 and 1982 new albums were released before they more or less disappeared from the scene for a few years, interrupted by short, cyclical attempts at comeback .

Comeback and late years

In 1987 Springfield achieved another great success in collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys . The duet What Have I Done to Deserve This reached second place in both the English and American charts and number 4 in the charts in Germany.

In the following period, i.e. at the end of the 1980s or the beginning of the 1990s, she achieved a few more successes such as Nothing Has Been Proved (DE 52nd, UK 16th), In Private (DE 4, UK 14), Reputation (DE place 29, UK place 38) - all extracts from the album Reputation (DE place 21, UK place 18). In Private and Nothing Has Been Proved , both were repeated compositions by the Pet Shop Boys, who produced half of the album and acted as executive producers for the entire album . The title Nothing Has Been Proved also found use in the UK hit film Scandal , which processed the Profumo / Keeler sex scandal from the 1960s.

Springfield's grave in Henley-on-Thames

After a two-year break, Dusty Springfield reached the British charts again in 1993, this time at number 75 with the title Heart and Soul , a duet with fellow singer Cilla Black . In 1995 she sang the title song of the hit film While You Were Asleep , Wherever Would I Be, in a duet with Daryl Hall . The title reached both the British and German charts and came from their album A Very Fine Love , also released in 1995 , which was to remain their last album.

When Springfield died of breast cancer on March 2, 1999 , the New York Times wrote that the world had lost "the best pop singer Britain has ever produced." She was honored by the Queen that day. Ten days after her death, Dusty Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . After their cremation, Dusty Springfield's ashes were scattered in Henley-on-Thames and on the Irish cliffs of Cliffs of Moher . There is a grave site at the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Henley-on-Thames.
