Timi Yuro (1963).

Timi Yuro (born as Rosemary Timotea Yuro or Rosemarie Timotea Aurro ; born August 4, 1940 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 30, 2004 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American soul and rhythm and blues singer.

Life

Yuro, who was of Italian descent, moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1952 . There she sang in her parents' Italian pub and in small clubs, where she was discovered by talent scouts.

After signing a recording deal with Liberty Records in 1959 , her first Billboard hit single in 1961, Hurt, was recorded at number 4, a cover version of Roy Hamilton's R&B ballad . Both here and in the follow- up hit 1962 What's a Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You?) , Which rose to number 12, Yuro was able to show her strong vocal expressiveness, reminiscent of Dinah Washington and other colorful singers. Because of this, many fans thought Yuro was black in the early 1960s.

In 1961 she toured with Frank Sinatra as a supporting act on his tour through Australia . In November 1962, Yuro released the first version of the song The Love of a Boy by Burt Bacharach and Hal David , which was later covered by singers such as Dionne Warwick and Julie Rogers .

Between 1961 and 1965 she produced eleven top 100 singles with Clyde Otis . In September 1963, Liberty released Make the World Go Away , an album of country and blues standards. Having reached the peak of their vocal expressiveness, this album contains, in addition to the title track of the same name, a cover version of Willie Nelsons Permanently Lonely and two different recordings of the Bluestit I'm Movin 'On .

Yuro was also known for expressive cover versions of American standards such as Let Me Call You Sweetheart , Smile and I Apologize .

In the late 1960s, Yuro toured between London and Las Vegas, but his career had passed its first peak. Her last studio album of the 60s, Something Bad On My Mind , was released in September 1968. After her marriage to Robert Selnick in 1969, Yuro left the music business. In 1971 their daughter Milan Selnick was born.

While she was trying to make a comeback in 1980 and had already put together a 14-piece band, she suddenly got acute larynx problems. After a six-month hiatus, she recorded All Alone Am I , which was released in Europe in 1981 and became a great success. In 1982 she performed her show in Las Vegas for two weeks in a row.

In September 1981 she thrilled more than 20,000 spectators in Rotterdam when she performed with Olivia Newton-John and Art Garfunkel . She was successful again, toured three more European tours and released three more albums, the last one in 1984, Timi Yuro Sings Willie Nelson , produced by her old friend Nelson.

In the late 1980s she developed voice problems again, was diagnosed with larynx cancer, and in 2002 her larynx was removed. She lived a secluded life and died in 2004.

Yuro still has a lot of fans. If you believe the obituary in their local paper, the Las Vegas Sun , one of their greatest was Elvis Presley . He had a top 10 hit on the country charts with his 1976 version of Hurt .

In April 2004, Morrissey officially announced her death on his website, calling her his favorite singer. In 1994 he released a version of her title Interlude in a duet with Siouxsie Sioux .

PJ Proby knew Timi Yuro from their time together in Hollywood and often mentioned this when he sang Hurt on his shows .
