Kind of sparkle
Arthur Ira "Art" Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941 in Forest Hills , New York City ) is an American singer and actor . He gained fame with Paul Simon as Duo Simon & Garfunkel .
Life
Art Garfunkel's ancestors were Romanian Jews . His parents were the housewife Rose and the traveling salesman Jacob "Jack" Garfunkel. Art has two brothers, the elder Jules and the younger Jerôme. He first studied and earned a bachelor's degree in art history and a master's degree in mathematics. Then he began his acting and music career.
Career
The beginnings
Together with his friend Paul Simon , whom he met in the early summer of 1953 while rehearsing for the play Alice in Wonderland , he first formed the musician duo Tom and Jerry (based on the cartoon characters of the same name). Garfunkel was also known as Tom Graph at the time. From 1957 they simply called themselves Simon & Garfunkel and became known in the folk rock scene.
After 1970
After the duo broke up in 1970 after numerous hits and albums, Garfunkel pursued his acting career and also released several solo albums. Although he was never able to build on the successes of Simon and Garfunkel , he had a few top 10 hits such as I Only Have Eyes for You, Bright Eyes and All I Know in Great Britain and the United States in the 1970s . In 1975 there was again a small collaboration with Paul Simon. For Simon's album Still Crazy After All These Years they recorded the song My Little Town together . At the same time, the song also appeared on the Garfunkel LP Breakaway and as a single. Bright Eyes also became number 1 single in the UK in 1979 through use in the animated film Watership Down .
After 1980
After his album Scissors Cut had only brought disappointing sales figures in 1981, he gave a benefit concert with Simon in Central Park in New York on September 19, 1981 in front of over half a million visitors. Simon and Garfunkel then worked on a new album together, but this project failed due to disagreements about Simon's lyrics and the voices that Garfunkel was supposed to sing.
After a long hiatus, Garfunkel released his album Lefty in 1988 .
Garfunkel has been walking long distances, with interruptions, since the 1980s. His project The Walk has already taken him across the North American continent and, since 1996, across Europe, from Ireland to Turkey. He can always be dropped at the point at which he last interrupted his march. In Japan he wandered through rice fields.
After 1990
In 1993 the album Up 'Til Now followed , which in addition to new songs also contained rarities and some hits. In 1997 Garfunkel recorded his live album Across America on Ellis Island in New York , with singer James Taylor as a guest.
After 2000
In February 2003 Simon and Garfunkel received a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement. On this occasion, the duo got together again and began the Old Friends tour through the United States , Europe and Japan at the end of 2003 . Recordings of this tour were released in 2004 on double CD and DVD under the title Old Friends . There was also a new studio recording by the duo on it, the title Citizen of the Planet . In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Garfunkel as 86th of the 100 best singers of all time . From the winter of 2010 Garfunkel suffered from vocal cord problems that made it almost impossible for him to perform. Several attempts at comeback had to be canceled because the voice could not withstand the strain.
The vocal cord problems have been overcome since the beginning of 2014. He is back touring on An Intimate Evening with Art Garfunkel program and says his voice is 96% restored.
In 2015 he was awarded the honorary prize of the German Sustainability Prize for his diverse political and social commitment . On his 2019 tour, he toured the USA, England, Wales and Germany.
family
From 1972 to 1975 he was married to Linda Grossman. He was later dating Laurie Bird , who took her own life in 1979. This contributed to his largely withdrawing from the public eye in the 1980s.
Since 1988 he is married to Kim Cermak, with whom he has a son James Arthur (born December 15, 1990). She supports her husband as a background singer at his concerts. At the concert on Ellis Island, which he dedicated to his family who immigrated from Eastern Europe, Kim (real name Kathryn Luce) and his son briefly appeared together; this performance is available on both the CD and the DVD for the concert. On October 5, 2005, at the age of 63, he became the father of a son for the second time, named Beau.
Garfunkel continued to use marijuana even after he was over 60 . In 2004/2005 he was noticed by the police in connection with traffic violations, in each case the illegal possession of marijuana was discovered. According to his own statements, he has given up smoking.
