Sounds of Silence is a music album by the American folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel . It was released in the United States on January 17, 1966. In the US, it rose to number 21 on the Billboard 200 and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 143 weeks.

history

After the release of her first album Wednesday Morning, 3 AM , Art Garfunkel had resumed his architecture studies and Paul Simon was in the UK for a year on business; The Paul Simon Songbook, recorded for the BBC , dates from this period . Producer Tom Wilson , who had already produced the first album, recognized the looming success of folk music. In the absence of Simon and Garfunkel, with the help of studio musicians, he provided the piece The Sounds of Silence, which had already been recorded for the first album, with electric guitar , bass and drums . This version was released and quickly reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Simon and Garfunkel returned to the studio to record a new album under the direction of Bob Johnston . Johnston had now replaced Wilson, who had retired after producing Bob Dylan's song Like a Rolling Stone . In addition to the two tracks Somewhere They Can't Find Me and We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin ' , which were recorded with Tom Wilson on April 5, 1965, all other tracks were recorded in December 1965. The recordings used are from December 13th, 14th and 21st.

Others

  • In contrast to the later albums, Sounds of Silence does not yet contain full text prints; for most of the titles only individual stanzas are reproduced. The two exceptions are Angie with the note: "Written by Davy Graham, one of England's finest jazz / blues guitarists." and We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin ' with the note: "Just for fun."
  • The track Somewhere They Can't Find Me is a mixture of two other tracks: the music comes from Davey Grahams Angi , the lyrics come - except for the chorus - from the song Wednesday Morning, 3 AM , which was released on the album of the same name .
  • The piece Richard Cory is based on the poem of the same name by Edwin Arlington Robinson .
  • The introduction to this version of The Sounds of Silence was mixed in two years later in the title Save the Life of My Child (from the album Bookends ).
