Brooke Gabrielle Fraser Ligertwood (born December 15, 1983 in Wellington , New Zealand) is a New Zealand pop / folk singer and songwriter .

Career

Brooke Fraser is the oldest of three children of former New Zealand rugby international Bernie Fraser and his wife Lynda. She grew up in Naenae, a suburb of Lower Hutt in the Wellington area. Between the ages of seven and seventeen she took piano lessons, began writing songs at the age of twelve, and taught herself to play the guitar at the age of 16. She got a recording deal when she was 18.

Her breakthrough came in the summer of 2003 with the song Better , which reached number 3 in the charts in her home country. The following debut album What to Do with Daylight rose to number 1 in the New Zealand album charts in November of the same year and stayed in the hit list for over a year. In 2004 she moved to Sydney where she began to volunteer with Hillsong Church . With her second album Albertine she was able to seamlessly build on her first success in 2006. It also peaked at number 1 and stayed in the charts for 52 weeks, and with Deciphering Me , she had her second top 5 single hit. As a result, this album was only released in 2007 in Australia, and another year later in the USA. There it reached number 3 among the Christian albums and number 90 on the Billboard 200 .

On March 17, 2008 she married Scott Ligertwood, while taking his name, but continues to perform under her stage name Brooke Fraser . They have two daughters together.

In August 2010, Brooke Fraser released the song Something in the Water in advance of her third album . This brought her to number 1 in the singles charts in New Zealand for the first time . The album Flags followed in October to the top position and also reached number 3 in Australia and number 4 in the US folk charts, where it was classified this time.

Something in the Water was released in Europe in spring 2011 . The song was particularly successful in German-speaking countries, where it achieved top 10 placements. In Germany it even achieved gold status. Then the album Flags also hit the charts and made it into the top 10.

In 2016 she came back with the song Therapy, on which she collaborated with Grammy-winning Joel Little.

At the 60th Grammy Awards in January 2018 she received the award in the category "Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance / Song" for the worship song "What a Beautiful Name", which she composed with Ben Fielding. As of January 2019, the song had 250 million views on the YouTube video platform and is now one of the most played modern hymns worldwide.
