The Bates were a punk band founded in Eschwege in 1987 , which was best known for their numerous cover versions. The name of the music group refers to the character Norman Bates from the film Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock .
history
"Founded at a time when it was said that 'punk rock is dead', they have always remained true to themselves and their style," announced the presenter Trini Trimpop at the first Power Vision Festival in Mainz -Finthen in October 1995 . December 1995 was broadcast as a recording on ZDF , the band to - and this style meant pure punk rock, although the lyrics were mostly about love, pain and longing.
The Bates published in addition to their own compositions on each of their albums at least two cover versions. Due to the fact that the cover versions were particularly well received, the band released an album in 2000 that exclusively contained foreign compositions from a wide variety of styles, which were presented in a new, Bates-typical style - by the Beatles ( Helter Skelter ) and the Rolling Stones (Out of Time) to Sailor (Glass of Champagne) and Aneka (Japanese Boy) to Eiffel 65 (Blue).
In 1994 the band performed at the Abistreich organized by Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre in the schoolyard of the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Göttingen .
In 2001 the band broke up. The background to this was allegedly above all disputes about the alcohol consumption of singer / bassist Zimbl. Markus “Zimbl” Zimmer released two solo albums until his death. There was also a mini album of "Suziz", a side project by Zimbl and Klube that already existed in Bates' time. This, as well as the two solo albums by Zimbl, were published in small numbers independently without professional distribution.
The Bates' greatest commercial successes include the songs Hello (Turn Your Radio On) (1994), Billie Jean (1994), A Real Cool Time (1995), It's Getting Dark (1996) and Independent Love Song (1997). The highest chart placement of a single was 10th place in Switzerland for the Michael Jackson cover version Billie Jean. Some of the band 's songs most loved by fans include It's Getting Dark, Say It Isn't So, A Real Cool Time, Bitter End, I Don't Wanna Love You, or Keine ist wie du.
Singer and frontman Markus Zimmer died on June 18, 2006 at the age of 41 in his apartment in Kassel. He was discovered there two days later. The reason given is a circulatory collapse with cardiac arrest, which can be traced back to his longstanding alcohol and drug addiction.
In December 2006 the 3-CD compilation A Tribute to Zimbl - Rocking on Heaven's Door was released as an obituary .
The proceeds of the tribute CD went entirely to charities in the fight against drugs.
The band, as well as Zimbl's family and friends, organized the so-called “Zimbl Tribute” Rocking on Heaven's Door in his honor on December 28, 2006 . This is also where the film recordings for the documentary Zimbl - A Real Cool Time by Sascha Nölke were made. Here, too, the entrance fees were used to make a donation to the “Global Care” organization.
