Aneka (born November 20, 1954 ; actually Mary Sandeman ) is a former Scottish folk singer . Many of their songs are sung in Gaelic .

biography

She began her career as a folk interpreter in the 1970s. Her debut album Introducing Mary Sanderman was released in 1979.

In 1981 she made a change of style and the single Japanese Boy and the album of the same name appeared under the Asian-sounding pseudonym Aneka, which underlines the Asian echoes of the synth-pop single. It achieved high chart positions across Europe and was number 1 in Great Britain and Northern Ireland , Switzerland and Belgium, among others . The LP under the pseudonym Aneka was successful in Belgium, England, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. Neil Ross helped with the production, the songs were written by Bobby Heatlie. Aneka stayed true to her pseudonym and her trademark geisha-like outfits for the next single Little Lady . The song made it into the top 10 in Austria and Germany.

A year later, Ooh Shooby Doo Doo Lang was followed by a smaller hit. In the meantime, Aneka had also taken off her kimono and presented herself in pant suits in the style of the 1920s. The follow-up single appeared in most of the European market with the title I was free as the A-side and the title Alister McColl on the B-side, while in France the rocking Alister McColl was the A-side. The publications were largely unsuccessful.

With Rose, Rose I Love You and Heart to beat , two more singles were released in 1983 under the pseudonym Aneka , for which the interpreter completely dispensed with an associated optical image and which also lack the high vocals typical of earlier releases.

Afterwards, Mary Sandeman focuses on Scottish folk again. After her retirement from the music business in the 1990s, she worked as a part-time - a tour guide in the Scottish town of Stirling .
