history

The early years (1994 to 2000)

Lead singer David Draiman (2016)

The band was formed in 1994 by Dan Donegan (guitar), Steve "Fuzz" Kmak (bass), Mike Wengren (drums) and former singer Erich Awalt under the name Brawl . After the band released their first demo that same year, Erich Awalt left the band in 1996.

Then the band started looking for a new singer. After several candidates came and went, the group put up a newspaper ad that David Draiman answered. Draiman had never sung in a band like this before. During the rehearsals Draiman convinced with his voice and his demeanor, so that he was finally accepted into the band.

The band, which renamed themselves Disturbed at Draiman's suggestion, recorded a demo that quickly aroused interest from various record labels. A copy of the recordings was sent to Manowar bassist Joey DeMaio through the producer of the demo , who was very committed to her in the following years. Disturbed played numerous concerts in the Chicago area and slowly gained a following.

When the first college radio stations started playing Disturbed songs, the first record companies noticed the band. Eventually she signed a deal with Giant Records, a sub-label of the Warner Music Group .

The Sickness (2000 to 2002)

Guitarist Dan Donegan (2016)

Under the direction of producer Johnny K (real name John Karkazis) the group recorded their debut album The Sickness at Groovemaster Studios in Chicago , which was released in March 2000. With the debut single "Stupify" she made her breakthrough. With Ozzy Osbourne , Disturbed was able to win another prominent fan and were invited to the Ozzfest tour. The album entered the US album charts at number 67 and later reached number 29. In the US alone, the album sold over five million times and is still her best-selling work to this day. With "Down With the Sickness", "Voices" and "The Game" three more singles were released. The album also contains a cover version of the Tears for Fears hit " Shout ".

In addition to the album, the band re-recorded the run-in music of the US wrestler Steve Austin ("Glass Shatters") and subsequently completed numerous tours . In 2001 Disturbed headlined the second stage of the Ozzfest tour. The band later went on the MTV- sponsored Return of the Rock tour with Godsmack and the Stone Temple Pilots . The Chicago concert was taped by MTV and broadcast frequently. Eventually the band went on their first headlining tour of North America called "Music as a Weapon". Disturbed u. a. by Adema and Drowning Pool .

At the end of 2001, the band traveled to Europe for the first time to play as the opening act for Marilyn Manson on his tour. Bassist Steve Kmak was unable to take part on this tour because he had broken his ankle . Marty O'Brian ( Methods of Mayhem and Kilgore) stepped in as a replacement . During the tour, singer David Draiman was seen sitting bleeding on an electric chair at the beginning of the Disturbed set . This was to symbolically show that people who want to develop individually are condemned by society.

Believe (2002 to 2005)

Bassist John Moyer (2016)

In June 2002 Disturbed released their first DVD called MOL (stands for "Meaning of Life"). The DVD is a documentary and shows the band in the studio and on tour as well as music videos , live recordings and interviews. In addition to DVD production, Disturbed recorded their second album, Believe , in March and April 2002 , which was more melodic than their debut. The album was released in September 2002 and debuted at number one on the US album charts. In the first week alone, more than 283,000 units are sold in the United States. To date, the album has been sold more than two million times in the United States. In Germany it reached number 68. With “Prayer”, “Liberate” and “Remember” three singles were released.

In 2003 Disturbed again took part in the Ozzfest tour and this time appeared on the main stage. Then the band went on the "Music as a Weapon II" tour together with Chevelle , Taproot and Unloco . Recordings of this tour were released in February 2004 with the live album Music as a Weapon II . After the tour ended, bassist Steve Kmak left the band due to personal differences. Only at the end of April 2004 was a successor presented with John Moyer , who previously played for The Union Underground .

On December 8, 2004, former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed during a concert in Columbus . Other crew members were also shot or seriously injured while trying to protect Darrell. To cover funeral and hospital costs, Disturbed played a benefit concert in Chicago with Anthrax , Soil and Drowning Pool. Disturbed played the panther song "Walk" from the album Vulgar Display of Power with Darrell's brother Vinnie Paul during their set .

Ten Thousand Fists and Indestructible (2005 to 2009)

Drummer Mike Wengren (2016)

In the spring of 2005 Disturbed recorded their third album Ten Thousand Fists . After its release in September 2005, it debuted at number one on the US album charts and sold 238,000 copies in the first week. With over two million units sold, the album went double platinum in the United States. In Germany, Ten Thousand Fists reached number 21 in the charts and was named "Album of the Month" by Rock Hard magazine.

The cover artwork was designed by the Canadian comic artist Todd McFarlane , who is best known for the character Spawn . With the songs “Guarded”, “Stricken”, “Just Stop”, “Ten Thousand Fists” and the Genesis cover version “Land of Confusion” a total of five singles were released. In autumn 2005 the band toured North America with Ill Niño and 10 Years . A European tour with Nevermore scheduled for spring 2006 had to be postponed twice because singer David Draiman suffered from reflux oesophagitis and had to spare his voice. The tour was rescheduled in September 2006. Also in 2006 Disturbed headlined the “Music as a Weapon III” tour, on which they were accompanied by Stone Sour , Flyleaf and Nonpoint .

The year 2007 began for the band with a lengthy creative break before the recordings for the fourth studio album Indestructible began in October 2007 . For the first time the band produced their own album. On March 10, 2008 Disturbed played together with Filter , the Pussycat Dolls and Jessica Simpson in front of US soldiers in Kuwait . The album was released on June 3, 2008 and debuted at number one on the US album charts. It sold 252,000 times in the US in the first week. The album was also successful in Germany and reached number eleven on the album charts.

In the summer of 2008 Disturbed initially played at numerous European festivals such as B. Rock am Ring , before the band toured Europe in autumn 2008 with Shinedown as the opening act. Disturbed was nominated for a Grammy in the category " Best Hard Rock Performance " for the song Inside the Fire . However, the award went to the group The Mars Volta . In the spring of 2009, the “Music as a Weapon IV” tour through North America followed, during which the band was accompanied by Killswitch Engage , Lacuna Coil and Chimaira .

Asylum and indefinite break (2009 to 2015)

Disturbed at Rock am Ring 2016

At the end of 2009, the band started preparing for their fifth studio album and a new DVD. The recordings for the new album Asylum lasted from February to April 2010. The work was again produced by Dan Donegan. During the studio stay , the band recorded a cover version of the Judas Priest song Living After Midnight for a sampler by British Metal Hammer. Asylum was published in August 2010. The pre-release Another Way to Die reached number 81 in the US single charts. This album also entered the US album charts at number one and sold 179,000 times in the first week. In Europe, Disturbed presented the new album as part of the Taste of Chaos Tour, which took the band to Germany in November / December 2010 together with Papa Roach , Buckcherry and Halestorm .

In July 2011 the band announced that they would take an indefinite break for personal reasons. Previously there were rumors of a possible breakup of the band. Dan Donegan stated a few years later that the band wanted to give the fans and themselves a break and that the musicians wanted to break out of the routine.

In November 2011 the band released the compilation The Lost Children , on which B-sides , rarities and various cover versions were put together. In January 2012 bassist and singer John Moyer joined the band Adrenaline Mob . Singer David Draiman also founded his new band Device in May 2012 , whose debut album was released in April 2013. Dan Donegan and Mike Wengren founded the band Fight or Flight together with the singer Dan Chandler from the band Evans Blue . The debut album was released in July 2013.

Comeback and Immortalized (2015 to 2017)

Moyer (left) and Draiman at Nova Rock 2016

In late April 2015, rumors surfaced that the band was working on a new album with producer Kevin Churko in Las Vegas. On June 20, 2015, a video was released showing the band mascot being kept alive with life support measures. Two days later she woke up and sat up. At the same time, an 18-hour countdown was posted on their website. A day later the band officially announced their comeback , released their new song The Vengeful One and announced a new studio album.

Immortalized was released on August 21, 2015 and rose to number one in the US and Canadian and number two in the German and Austrian album charts. In the Echo Awards 2017 was Immortalized in the category international Band nominated, but the award went to Metallica . The album contains a cover version of the song The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel , which became the biggest hit in the band's history. The single reached number one in the Austrian charts and was awarded platinum. In Germany, too, the song became a top 10 hit.

The song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Performance , but the award went posthumously to David Bowie . The fact that the R&B singer Beyoncé had also been nominated for her collaboration with Jack White was described by David Draiman as "strange". Disturbed played at festivals such as the Download Festival , Graspop Metal Meeting , Hellfest , Nova Rock , Chicago Open Air and Louder Than Life in 2016 . This was followed by a summer tour with Breaking Benjamin and an autumn tour with Chevelle and Nothing More .

On November 18, 2016, the live album Live at Red Rocks was released that was recorded near Denver in Red Rocks Park . A European tour with Avenged Sevenfold followed in spring 2017 . After the concert in Stuttgart's Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle , a tragic incident occurred when a roadie fell from a height of 20 meters during the dismantling work and fatally injured a colleague.

Evolution (since 2018)

Since February 2018, the band has been working on new music with producer Kevin Churko in the studio. For a long time it was unclear whether a new studio album or the acoustic EP planned by David Draiman would be recorded. In June 2018, the debut album The Sickness in the US was awarded five times platinum and Ten Thousand Fists double platinum. A month later, the recordings were finished and the band asked their fans via a newly set up website if they wanted a hard song or a ballad as their first single. Over 80,000 fans cast their vote, with 83% voting for a tough song. Finally, on October 19, 2018, the seventh studio album, Evolution , was released, which entered the German album charts at number two. In the United States, the album peaked at number four, finishing the run of five consecutive number one albums for the band.

At the beginning of 2019 a North American tour started with Three Days Grace . During the tour, Disturbed played a short concert for ABC - late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! . This was followed by a European tour with the supporting act Skindred . In the meantime, Disturbed set a new record when the band hit the sixth number one single on Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs with A Reason to Fight . In the summer and fall of 2019, Disturbed played another North American tour with the support groups Pop Evil and In This Moment . For the summer of 2020, the band announced a North American tour on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the debut album The Sickness , on which the band will be accompanied by Staind and the Bad Wolves .

Band logo and mascot

The band logo

The band logo is a combination of symbols from four different religions . Involved are the Star of David of Judaism , the cross of Christianity , the pentagram of the Wicca movement and the crescent moon of Islam . The symbols are interwoven and should represent a unity. The US online magazine Loudwire featured Disturbed's band logo in a series of the best band logos.

The mascot of Disturbed is The Guy (Engl. The type ) called. Originally the mascot was a drawing of a grinning face, as seen on the back of the debut album The Sickness . After The Guy was digitally edited three times, the character became the official band mascot. David Finch then drew The Guy as a full body and figure.

style

Disturbed names classic heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath , Judas Priest , Iron Maiden , Queensrÿche , Metallica, more modern metal bands like Pantera , but also progressive rock bands like Rush as main influences . In the beginning the band was often assigned to the genre Nu Metal, but they resisted. In an interview with the German rock hard magazine, guitarist Dan Donegan commented on this topic:

“We hardly work with Nu Metal elements at all. We don't have a DJ , there is no rap , no funky guitars. Instead, we put great emphasis on fat old school riffs , good melodies, double bass and some pathos. "

- Dan Donegan

The exact genre allocation is controversial. The names range from alternative metal , heavy metal , modern metal to hard rock . Uwe Schnädelbach from the German metal magazine Rock Hard wrote in his review of the album Ten Thousand Fists that the band's “idiosyncratic sound” “is based on elements from the areas of Thrash , Power and Nu Metal as well as modern rock and pop” and “not” fits right into one of the usual drawers ”. He also states that the "most frequently made comparisons with bands like Tool , Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Manowar and Godsmack all ultimately lag".

reception

Disturbed are among the most successful metal bands of the 2000s. They have sold over 17 million albums to date. The albums Believe , Ten Thousand Fists , Indestructible , Asylum and Immortalized all went straight to number one on the US album charts. After Metallica and the Dave Matthews Band , Disturbed is only the third rock band to have achieved this with five consecutive albums. The most successful album so far is the debut album The Sickness , which was awarded five times platinum in the USA for over five million units sold.

The album Believe took 429th place in the book “Best of Rock & Metal”, in which the German Rock Hard magazine lists the 500 best rock and metal albums in their opinion. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann certifies the band “great melodies of the old School, harmonies full of pathos and a front man [...] with a powerful, clear voice full of recognition value ”. The US magazine Loudwire has Disturbed on its list of the 50 most important metal bands of the 21st century.

In 2015 the band recorded a cover version of the top 500 song The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel . When Paul Simon heard the cover version of his song accompanied by an orchestra on the US talk show Conan on March 28, 2016 , he expressed his admiration and thanks to the singer David Draiman by email. Disturbed's appearance on this show was the first ever to be viewed over 100 million times on YouTube .

Disturbed won the 2016 Loudwire Music Awards for Best Rock Video . Disturbed was named Rock Artist of the Year at the IHeart Radio Music Awards 2017 . At the Metal Hammer Awards 2018, Draiman was awarded together with Judas Priest in the Maximum Metal category.
