Flyleaf is an American post-grunge band from Belton , Texas . It was founded in 2001 and went through several name changes.
Band history
After Lacey Mosley by Temple ( Texas ) pulled, she met drummer James Culpepper. They wrote some songs together, with Lacey playing guitar as well as singing. At that time Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann were playing in a band called Sporos who were looking for a singer. They invited Lacey to a rehearsal, decided against an engagement. A short time later, Sporos broke up and Bhattacharya and Hartmann joined Lacey and Culpepper. The group was now called lists. In 2002 bassist Pat Seals (Ex-The-Grove) joined the quartet, which was henceforth called Passerby.
Under the name Passerby, the band recorded three EPs and played around 100 concerts in Texas within two years. In 2003 the band played a showcase for the president of RCA in New York in the hope of getting a contract, but they turned the band down. However, the president of Octane Records was present, who signed the band in 2004. A short time later, the band had to change their name to Flyleaf for legal reasons.
In March 2004 the band went to Seattle to record an EP under the direction of Rick Parasher (including Pearl Jam , Blind Melon ). Then the band went on tour with 3 Doors Down , Staind , Saliva and TRUSTcompany . The EP was released in October 2004. A year later, the band finally recorded their debut album. The work simply called " Flyleaf " was produced by Howard Benson. Dave Navarro (including Jane's Addiction ) could be engaged as a guest musician . The album was released in North America on October 4, 2005. With I'm So Sick and Fully Alive , two singles were released. The song All Around Me was released for the Christian radio stations .
In early 2006, the band switched to J Records . For the European market, the band was signed by the German record company Gun Records . In the summer of the year, the band performed at the twin festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . The album Flyleaf was released on August 18, 2006 in Germany. In autumn the band will play on the Family Values Tour together with Korn , the Deftones , Stone Sour and Dir En Gray .
In late 2006, Flyleaf toured with Disturbed , Stone Sour and Nonpoint on the Music as a Weapon III tour . The band sold the exclusive EP Music as a Weapon EP at the concerts with an acoustic version of Fully Alive , and three previously unreleased songs: Much Like Falling , Justice and Mercy , and Christmas Song . All EP proceeds went to World Vision (United States) .
In early 2007 they toured Australia with Three Days Grace at the Soundwave Festival. They also toured Europe with Forever Never and Stone Sour .
In spring 2007, they started their Justice & Mercy tour. First with Skillet and Dropping Daylight, later with the Sick Puppies, Kill Hannah and Resident Hero. Flyleaf also took part in the Family Values Tour in 2007. Her headlining tour in mid-2007 was sponsored by the film Evan Almighty .
On October 30, 2007 they released their album Flyleaf as a special edition with DVD. The CD contains the songs from the first album as well as five previously unreleased acoustic recordings, the DVD music videos, interviews, a poster and a free ringtone.
In late November, Flyleaf were guests at Power of One, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and acted as a jury.
Lacey can also be heard on the 7th studio album "7th Symphony" by the band Apocalyptica . The title of the song is "Broken Pieces" and there is also an accompanying music video. She also took part in the song "Courage" by Orianthi . There is also a matching music video for this song.
On October 22, 2012, Lacey Sturm announced that she would step down as the singer of Flyleaf.
On August 15, 2016, Kristen May announced her exit from the band with a video on Facebook.
The band name
Overall, the band went through two name changes. The first band name, "Listen", means "Listen!", "Passerby" means "passerby". Since another group had this protected from them, they finally decided on “Flyleaf”. In English, the first, unprinted page of a book is called "flyleaf". Singer Lacey: “It is meant to be dedicated when you give away the book. Our songs are similar: personal messages that fill the void. "
Influences
Flyleaf cite the bands Rage Against the Machine , Foo Fighters , Incubus , Soundgarden , The Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana as influences. Musically, Flyleaf can be assigned to post-grunge .
religion
All five members of the band are Christians . This belief influences her music, but the singer Lacey doesn't think that would make her a Christian band.
Success of the band
Her first studio album Flyleaf debuted at # 88 on the Billboard 200 in March 2006. After 77 weeks he achieved the highest placement at number 57. The album sold over 850,000 times (as of October 2007). The CD / DVD version sold more than 13,000 copies in the first week, and the album made it to number 52 in the DVD charts. The titles Cassie, Red Sam and Breathe Today were not published, so it was only for Breathe Today shot a music video. Do You Hear What I Hear, a cover version of Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne from 1962. This single was only available as an exclusive download from Yahoo! Music. It wasn't until 2006 that Flyleaf became more and more noticed, they released the singles I'm So Sick and Fully Alive and both reached the top 40 of the US rock charts. I'm So Sick appeared in Die Hard 4.0 and a remix on the soundtrack of Resident Evil: Extinction . The third single All Around Me , which was released in late 2007, was Flyleaf's most successful single to date. Not only did they reach the top 10 of the modern rock charts for the first time, it was also their first hit in the official Hot 100 charts in early 2008 .
