Three Days Grace is a Canadian alternative rock - or post-grunge - band . It consists of the founding members drummer and background singer Neil Sanderson, electric bassist and background singer Brad Walst, lead guitarist Barry Stock since 2003 and lead singer Matt Walst since 2013 .

history

The band was founded in 1992 by Adam Gontier , Neil Sanderson, Brad Walst, Phil Crowe and Joe Grant in Norwood , Ontario , Canada under the name Groundswell . Three years later, the album Wave of Popular Feeling was released with a print run of just 150 copies. Shortly thereafter, however, the band broke up again. In 1997 Adam Gontier, Neil Sanderson and Brad Walst got back together and covered various songs under the name Three Days Grace . With the help of Trevor McNevan, front man of Thousand Foot Krutch , they released a demo album that only contained four songs and of which only 100 copies were made. They also toured with Thousand Foot Krutch as their opening act.

In November 2003, the band released their debut album, Three Days Grace , with the newly added band member Barry Stock , which made it into the Canadian Top 20 and was in the US Top 200 for a few weeks. The single I Hate Everything About You was number one in Canada. It was followed by the single Just Like You , Home and Wake Up , although no music video was made for the latter.

Adam Gontier was dependent on the pain reliever oxycodone , which is why he underwent drug therapy in 2005 . During this time he wrote several songs. Among other things, Gone Forever is about his life without the drug and Animal I Have Become refers to the change in character that the Froge caused in him. When he returned to the band in 2006, their second album One-X was released, which entered the American Billboard charts at number 5. Again they released four singles from the album. The starting single Animal I Have Become was followed by Pain , Never Too Late , Time of Dying and Riot , the latter two of which still have no music video to this day. Three Days Grace performed with the song Are You Ready? in the movie Raise Your Voice . Two of her songs are in the game SmackDown! vs. Raw 2007 represented in the form of Riot and Animal I Have Become . She also had a guest role on the series Ghost Whisperer with Jennifer Love Hewitt .

In 2007 the band went on tour with Breaking Benjamin , Seether , Skillet , Red and Econoline Crush . In August 2008 the first live DVD Live at the Palace was released, but it is only available at Best Buy and other online stores. In October and November they accompanied the band 3 Doors Down on their tour through Germany as the opening act. The third studio album Life Starts Now was released on September 22nd, 2009, the first single Break on September 1st. In an interview with drummer Neil Sanderson and radio station X103, Sanderson announced that a new album would be released in 2012. It was called the Transit of Venus and was released on October 2nd. The first single was released in August 2012 and is called Chalk Outline .

Shortly before the 2013 tour, on December 21, 2012, Adam Gontier left the band for health reasons. For the duration of the tour he was represented by Matt Walst , Brad's brother and singer of the band My Darkest Days . On March 28, 2014 the band announced via Facebook and Matt Walst via Youtube that he is now a permanent member and new front singer of Three Days Grace; a new album was also announced. The first single Painkiller was announced three days later on March 31, 2014 and has been available on iTunes since April 1, 2014. Her song I Am Machine , for which a music video was shot, was released as a follow-up single on September 30, 2014. With the single release, the band announced on their homepage March 31, 2015 as the fixed release date for their new album entitled Human . Human reached number 2 on the US charts and was awarded gold.

On November 18, 2016, Three Days Grace released a cover of the song You Don't Get Me High Anymore . In July 2017 the band started work on their sixth studio album Outsider , which was released on March 9th. For the album, the band worked with Rhys Fulber , who was responsible for Fear Factory's breakthrough album Demanufacture , among other things . On January 25, 2018, she released the first single, The Mountain .

With a total of twelve singles in the US Billboard mainstream rock songs , they are the most successful band in the Billboard special charts, ahead of Van Halen .

Music genre

At the beginning the band was mainly influenced by alternative rock bands like Helmet , Kyuss and Sunny Day Real Estate . Also Alternative Metal influenced the band. The lyrics were mainly influenced by the gloomy, fearful life in the small town and the ubiquitous teenage fear. The successor, on the other hand, was largely shaped by the drug and addiction experiences of singer Adam Gontier. This album, too, was essentially a dark and direct album. Here, too, some Nu Metal elements were mixed into the music, so that some songs are reminiscent of Papa Roach , 3 Doors Down and Seether . Both albums also contain some mainstream-compatible ballads. The Nu-Metal influences disappeared on the third album Life Starts Now , but influences from mainstream rock bands like Nickelback were added. Even with the change of singers between Transist of Venus and Humans , the stylistic direction did not change.
