3 Doors Down is an American rock band from Escatawpa in the US state of Mississippi . The band name is made up of the number 3 for the number of band members when finding a name and Doors Down - a lettering above a club in which they played together.

Band history

The band was founded in 1996 by singer Brad Arnold, guitarist Matt Roberts and bassist Todd Harrell, initially as a trio. A year later, the group recorded their first demo album as a quintet, which was simply called 3 Doors Down . The band's official debut album, The Better Life , came into being in New York City in 1999. It was released in spring 2000 and contained the hit Kryptonite with which 3 Doors Down made their breakthrough. This song was the first debut song to be number 1 in four category charts, and it reached number 3 in the official Hot 100 of the USA. The follow-up single Loser continued the success and stayed at number 1 on the American mainstream rock charts for 21 weeks To date, no other song has been able to hold its own at the top of the charts. Both singles were also able to place in Germany. The third single Be Like That was part of the soundtrack to the movie American Pie 2 , on which the song appeared in a slightly modified version as The American Pie 2 Edit in 2001. The last single on the album was Duck and Run , which also became number one in the mainstream rock charts. The band had brought three of the four singles on the first album to number 1 on the mainstream rock charts. After these successes, 3 Doors Down received prizes such as the Billboard Music Award in three categories. Brad Arnold was also voted "Songwriter of the Year". They have been able to steadily expand their fan base through numerous tours .

Singer Brad Arnold

In 2002 the second album Away from the Sun followed , which was no longer as innovative and impetuous as its predecessor, but nevertheless convinced with its melodies and profound lyrics. The first single When I'm Gone became another hit in the US and was number one on the mainstream rock charts for 17 weeks. In addition, the single was nominated for two Grammys . The Road I'm On was only the second single in the band's career that wasn't in first place, but was in the top 10 for a long time. This was followed by two slow ballads, Here Without You and Away from the Sun. The former was a worldwide success and already the third top 5 hit in the official US charts.

In 2003, Another 700 Miles was followed by a live EP with seven titles. However, there were two previously unreleased tracks on it: It's Not Me (released on their studio album Seventeen Days in 2005) and the Lynyrd-Skynyrd - (Cover) That Smell .

In 2005 there was a line-up change: drummer Daniel Adair left the band to play with Nickelback and was replaced by Greg Upchurch from Puddle of Mudd . Shortly before the change, the third album Seventeen Days came out. The album went from zero to one in the American album charts in the first week and the first single Let Me Go came to number 14. This was followed by the singles Behind Those Eyes , Live for Today , Landing in London (with Bob Seger ) and Here by Me . Although they weren't successful in the official charts, they mostly reached the top 20 in the rock charts.

On May 16, 2008, the band's fourth studio album, 3 Doors Down , was released in Germany , which immediately rose to number six in the German album charts. In the United States, the album became the band's second to hit number one on the charts. It was awarded gold after just four weeks. The first single released was It's Not My Time . In the US, the song was number 1 on the rock charts for three weeks. The second single Let Me Be Myself was released, which was released on October 24, 2008.

The fifth studio album Time of My Life was released on July 15, 2011. From this, the singles When You're Young and Every Time You Go were released. The band was on tour in Germany from February 21st to March 7th. Seether and Prime Circle played the opening act .

On May 23, 2012, the band announced on their homepage that guitarist and background singer Matt Roberts is leaving the band for health reasons. Roberts had been a founding member for 16 years. After this became known through a short message on Facebook, the band's homepage, on which a more detailed statement was written, briefly collapsed. Since then, Chet Roberts, the band's guitar technician, has taken over his parts.

In April 2013, Todd Harrell caused a traffic accident in which a 47-year-old man was killed. Since he was also under the influence of alcohol and various prescription drugs, he was threatened with a prison sentence of several years. Just a year later, he was caught drunk behind the wheel again. He was then kicked out of the band with immediate effect. In addition to a six month detention, Harrell was sentenced to half a year in prison. Justin Biltonen, who already represented Harrell on the 2013 European tour, is a new permanent member of the band.

In May 2015 the band announced a new album. This should be called "Us and the Night" and appear in March 2016. In the course of this, a European tour with Pop Evil was announced as support. Long-time guitarist Matt Roberts passed away in August 2016. He belonged to the band between 1996 and 2012 and recorded six studio albums and one greatest hits album.

Musical style

The group's musical style is a mix of alternative rock, post-grunge and pop . However, Todd Harrell, the band's former bass player, claimed, "It's not really alternative or metal or anything - it's rock 'n' roll !"

reception

criticism

In Europe in particular, the band's openly displayed patriotism meets with criticism. This is most evident in the song Citizen / Soldier, which was written as a promotional song for the US National Guard .

3 Doors Down, however, see themselves misunderstood by the criticism, as their patriotism does not include any political activities such as B. support the Iraq war . According to their own statement, the band only wants to support all soldiers who are drafted into the war and do not know whether they will ever come back. Singer Brad Arnold makes the following statement on the band's live album: “Of course we're not pro war. Nobody likes was. Everybody knows what war brings. But we do support our men and women in the military. "( " Of course we are not for war. Nobody likes war. Everyone knows what war is. But we do support our men and women in the military. " ) Chris Henderson gave the Internet service Ultimate Guitar.com in August 2008 an interview in which he emphasized that the band is by no means political. “The critics don't know anything about us. We don't do propaganda and are not a political band either. "

Despite their denials about their political position, they performed at the concert on the day before the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 19, 2017. The band's manager Angus Vail later commented as the reason for the performance that the entire band would only believe in God, guns and rural black and white thinking .

successes

In total, 3 Doors Down have achieved 26 platinum status and seven number one rock singles in the US to date . The quintet has also won several awards (Billboard Award, American Music Award ) and has been nominated three times for a Grammy. 3 Doors Down have now sold more than 16 million records, most of them in the USA. In one year, 3 Doors Down played more than 300 sold-out live performances, making them one of the top acts in the United States. The biggest crowd so far that 3 Doors Down played in front of 200,000 people was at a performance in Daytona Beach in 2005. In general, the band plays in front of an average of 5,000 to 10,000 fans, depending on the size of the venue.
