Lynyrd Skynyrd [ ˈlɛnɝd ˈskɪnɝd ], initially spelled Lynard Skynard (old and new names are pronounced the same), is an American rock band . She is one of the most important representatives of Southern Rock , which was popular in the 1970s . Well-known songs are Simple Man (1973), Tuesday's Gone (1973), What's Your Name (1977), That Smell (1977), Free Bird (1973) and especially Sweet Home Alabama from 1974.
Their music - often played with three lead guitars - is a hard-played mixture of rock , blues-rock and country ; the texts deal with typical southern themes . The appearance and flair of the band also embody the typical southern state mentality. Lynyrd Skynyrd differ from the other, typical southern rock bands, such as the Allman Brothers , whose music also includes jazz elements.
Band history
During her time at the high school in Jacksonville ( Florida ) played Ronnie Van Zant , Allen Collins , Gary Rossington , Bob Burns and Larry Junstrom in a band called The Noble Five . The local sports teacher Leonard Skinner caught several members of the band violating the school's dress code, which also stipulated the haircut. When they gave up school, the band name was initially changed to Leonard Skinnerd . In order to avoid any further difficulties, the name was gradually alienated, all vowels were exchanged for 'y'. Leonard Skinner died in September 2010, the New York Times called him "probably the most influential physical education teacher in American pop culture". The band rehearsed in Ronnie's garage, but after disputes with the neighbors increased, they moved their sessions to a farmhouse near Green Cove Springs. This place was called "Hell House" and was the origin of Lynyrd Skynyrd's music.
The band started performing all over the southern United States. The first major success came in 1968 when Lynyrd Skynyrd won a competition to produce a single in the studio. However, this debut single was a flop. The band toured the US as an opening act , and among the first demos of the rockers is the song Free Bird (but still without a guitar solo), which later became one of the band's first hits. In 1971 Johnny Johnson brought Lynyrd Skynyrd into his Muscle Shoals Sound Studio , where the ensemble was able to gain their first real studio experience. During these sessions, however, Leon Wilkeson took over the bass and Rickey Medlocke took over the drums. It was not until 1973 that the band (with new entry Ed King as third guitarist and bassist Wilkeson) signed to Al Kooper's record company Sound of the South ( sold to MCA in 1974 ). Al Kooper is credited with the actual discovery of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He produced their first three albums. The first was called pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd' skin-'nérd and was released in 1973. The band's early hit, Free Bird , and appearances as opening act for The Who added greatly to the band's popularity.
In 1974 she released her album Second Helping , from which her hit single Sweet Home Alabama (number 8 in the US charts) comes, a musical answer to the songs Alabama and Southern Man by Neil Young . The LP reached number 12 in the US charts and went platinum several times. Nuthin 'Fancy , released in 1975, became the band's first CD to be ranked in the US Top 10. The long-playing record Gimme Back My Bullets , which followed in 1976 , could not continue the success of its predecessors. That only succeeded at the end of 1976 with the live double album One More from the Road . The band's new guitarist, Steve Gaines, played here for the first time. The band was completed by three background singers. The live album became Lynyrd Skynyrd's second top 10 hit.
On October 17, 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd released her sixth album Street Survivors . Three days later, the charter plane crashed, with the band on the road from Greenville to Baton Rouge ( Louisiana was). The machine crashed in a wooded area in Amite County near Gillsburg, Mississippi , just a few hundred meters from the McComb, Mississippi airfield . The pilots had hoped to be able to land there. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines , his sister Cassie Gaines and the band manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed in the crash. The other band members survived seriously injured. The accident was attributed to insufficient fuel. A year later, a court blamed human error on the crew. After the crash, it turned out that some passengers wanted to reschedule before the flight. Cassie Gaines wanted to ride in one of the equipment trucks, others had already booked alternative flights. Only when Ronnie Van Zant decided to use the museum-quality Convair CV 300 (a converted CV-240) one last time shortly before leaving , the rest of the crew followed him. The Scottish rock band Nazareth almost got on board the plane. Both groups were on a joint US tour at the time, and the southern rockers had invited the Scots to join them on the group's own plane. However, Nazareth had to refuse due to a press conference and later fly after.
The LP Street-Survivors , which was delivered just a few days after the crash, featured the band in the midst of flames on the cover. Out of respect for the victims of the tragic event, this cover was then replaced by another (just the band, against a black background). This album became one of their greatest successes for the band: number 13 in the UK and number 5 in the American LP charts. From the rest of the group emerged the Rossington-Collins Band , which released two albums between 1980 and 1982.
Reorganization
In 1987, on the tenth anniversary of the crash, Lynyrd Skynyrd reorganized. Johnny Van Zant, the brother of the late Ronnie Van Zant, called in Rossington, Powell, King, Wilkeson and the guitarist Randall Hall (who replaced Allen Collins, who was paralyzed in a car accident and who died on January 23, 1990 as a result of the accident) . Initially only planned as a revival band for a tour (reunion tour) with 32 concerts, it then proved to be stable and in 1988 released the live double album Southern by the Grace of God - Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour .
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Lynyrd Skynyrd released new albums regularly. With Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 , The Last Rebel and the 1997 work Twenty , they keep the spirit and idea of Southern Rock and the memory of the deceased band members alive.
In 1998 the live double CD Lyve from Steel Town was released , which, in addition to new titles and old classics, also contains two radio interviews and some videos for the PC.
Edge of Forever was released in 1999 . Here the new band members Hughie Thomasson (previously with the Outlaws ) and Ricky Medlocke (previously Blackfoot ) were able to get involved in the new songs. Her new influence made for a fresh, rocking sound in addition to the hard voice of Johnny van Zant. At the same time it was possible to continue the tradition of the old Lynyrd-Skynyrd-Band.
In 2001 bassist Leon Wilkeson died of emphysema and liver damage; he was replaced by Ean Evans.
In 2006 Hugh "Hughie" Edward Thomasson Jr. left the band to reform The Outlaws . Mark “Sparky” Matejka took his place as 3rd guitarist.
On March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , along with Black Sabbath , Blondie , Miles Davis and the Sex Pistols , but the latter refused to accept. On September 9, 2007, Thomasson died of a heart attack at his home in Brooksville, Florida, at the age of 55.
In 2009, Billy Powell died of a heart attack in Orange Park, Florida, on January 28th at the age of 56. The paramedics, whom he himself had called by phone, could only determine his death. That same year, on May 6th, bassist Donald "Ean" Evans died. He died of cancer. The background singer JoJo Billingsley died on June 24, 2010 of cancer.
In September 2012, the band announced that they would no longer display the Confederate flag . They did not want to be associated with racists who had appropriated this flag. After fan protests, the band rowed back again. Gary Rossington said in a statement on the band's website that showing the flag would symbolize the commitment to state rights and also show the band members' pride in being from the southern United States. He stressed that the flag would mean “Heritage not Hate” for the group.
On April 4, 2015, Bob Burns, the band's drummer on their first two albums, died at the age of 64. He 'd gone off the road in his car in Cartersville , Georgia and crashed into a tree without his seat belt on.
resolution
In early 2018, the band announced that they would split up after completing their "Last of the Street Survivors" farewell tour. As part of this tour, there were also concerts in Germany in 2019.
The Rolling Stone listed Lynyrd Skynyrd 95th of the 100 greatest musicians of all time .
