Gary Rossington (born December 4, 1951 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American musician . He is the co-founder, guitarist and songwriter of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd .

Life

Rossington formed the band with his friends Ronnie Van Zant , Allen Collins , Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in the summer of 1964, which was later called Lynard Skynard and soon after the final name Lynyrd Skynyrd . The band had their first success in 1973 with Free Bird , followed in 1974 by Sweet Home Alabama . In a plane crash on October 20, 1977, the band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines as well as the tour manager Dean Kilpatrick, the pilot Walter McCreary and the copilot William Gray were killed. The other members survived injured.

In the early 1980s Rossington played with some of the other surviving band members together in the Rossington-Collins Band, which only existed until 1986. In 1982 he married Dale Krantz , with whom he has two daughters Mary and Annie. Rossington still plays in a newly formed Lynyrd-Skynyrd formation today.

Equipment

Rossington plays a Gibson SG . The SG dates from the early 1960s. Gary only uses them live on "Free Bird". Much more famous, on the other hand, is his Gibson Les Paul , of which there is also a Gibson Signature model from 2003 in a limited edition of 250 pieces. The model for his slide game with bottlenecks was Duane Allman , one of the founders of the Allman Brothers Band .
