biography
After Duane Allman had learned the first guitar fingerings from his brother Gregg at the age of about 14 , the brothers played together in various, mainly psychedelic rhythm and blues performing groups, with Duane soon giving his brother the ability to play the guitar surpassed. In the course of time he switched to organ and piano; later, with the Allman Brothers , Gregg would also compose most of the pieces for the group.
In 1965 the Allman brothers formed the band Allman Joys ; The Hour Glass followed in 1967 . This band also recorded two albums later released on double LPs during a visit to California.
From autumn 1969 to spring 1970 Duane, who had since moved to Florida, played between sessions as a studio musician for FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals , Alabama (for Aretha Franklin , Wilson Pickett and King Curtis ) with drummer Butch Trucks , who Band of guitarist Dickey Betts and drummer Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson . After a jam session at the Green House in Jacksonville (Florida) and the arrival of Duane's brother Gregg from California, the Allman Brothers Band was complete. In addition to Duane [lead-g, slide-g, voc] and Gregg Allman [lead-voc, org, p] the band consisted of Dickey Betts [lead-g, slide-g, voc], Berry Oakley [el-b, voc] and the two drummers Jai Johanny Johanson [dr, congas, perc] and Butch Trucks [dr, tympani]. It was also Duane who introduced the slide guitar to Don Felder , the later guitarist of the Eagles .
Duane Allman recorded a total of four albums - two of them double albums - with the original line-up of the Allman Brothers Band . In addition to the albums of the Allman Brothers Band, he also worked on the Layla album produced in 1970 by Eric Clapton / Derek & The Dominos.
Duane Allman, who experimented with intoxicating drugs and often went on risky motorcycle hunts, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon on October 29, 1971 when he tried to avoid a suddenly swerving truck. The double album Eat a Peach , which had begun during his lifetime, was posthumously completed and published by the rest of the band.
A year after Duane's death, the group's bassist Berry Oakley also had a fatal motorcycle accident at almost the same point as Duane. The Allman Brothers Band - interrupted by more or less long breaks - existed until 2014.
Musical work
As a guitarist, especially with the slide guitar, he combined blues-heavy rock music with elements of jazz as well as gospel and country music.
The guitars Duane Allman played at the time of the Allman Brothers Band were either a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop , a '59 Gibson Les Paul Darkburst or a '68 Gibson SG Standard . He used a Gibson ES-345 to record the very first Allman Brothers album, The Allman Brothers Band . He mainly used a 50-watt Marshall Bass Head as an amplifier, and a coricidin bottle as a slide.
