In the 60s he drew attention to himself with his work in smaller bands, so that he was given the opportunity to join Tommy Roe's backing band . This activity brought him to Florida, where he met Dickey Betts and played in his band The Second Coming . Together with him, Gregg Allman , Duane Allman , Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson , the Allman Brothers Band was founded in 1969. With the live album At Fillmore EastThe band became commercially successful, but was overshadowed by Duane Allman's fatal motorcycle accident in October 1971.
