38 Special (also known as .38 Special or Thirty-Eight Special) is an American rock band that was formed in Jacksonville , Florida in 1975 . Initially, the band played Southern Rock along the lines of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers . From the late 1970s to 38 Special on the turned mainstream -oriented rock music and the AOR to. The albums of the late 1990s and 2000s are assigned to pop rock . The group achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1980s.
Band history
38 Special was founded in 1975 by singer Donnie Van Zant, guitarists Jeff Carlisi and Don Barnes, bassist Ken Lyons and drummers Jack Grondin and Steve Brookins. After the label A&M Records signed the group, the debut album .38 Special was released in 1977 , followed by the second album Special Delivery (1978). Although these two albums received little support, the group was able to gain a solid fan base through numerous live performances. Before the third album was recorded, bassist Lyons was replaced by Larry Junstrom. At the same time, 38 Special changed the musical direction from pure Southern Rock to AOR and took the help of third parties with the songwriting . The title track of the 1979 album Rockin 'Into the Night , written by Survivor members Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik , became the band's first chart success with number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 . At the same time, guitarist Barnes took over large parts of the vocals. The next album, Wild-eyed Southern Boys , was released in 1981 and brought about the commercial breakthrough. It reached the top 18 of the US album charts and was awarded platinum certification, in turn, written by Jim Peterik Single -Auskopplung Hold On Loosely peaked at # 27 on the Billboard Hot 100th
In the early 1980s toured 38 Special first time through Europe and found his followers through their appointed two drummers sound, but the commercial breakthrough did not succeed there. In the USA, however, the 1982 album Special Forces was certified again with platinum and brought the band their first top ten success with Caught Up in You . The following two albums, Tour de Force (1983) and Strength in Numbers (1986), also achieved high placements on the Billboard 200 . In 1987 Don Barnes and Steve Brookins left the band, Barnes was replaced by guitarists Max Carl and Danny Chauncey. The 1987 best-of- album Flashback initially sold slowly, the focus of the band was on keeping their fans with the next studio album. After Donnie Van Zant and Jeff Carlisli participated as live musicians on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1988 tour, 38 Special released the next studio album, Rock & Roll Strategy . Although the band managed another top ten hit in the USA with the ballad Second Chance , the album itself marked the band's last commercial success. In 1991 Don Barnes returned to the band and the line-up was expanded to include drummer Scott Hoffman and keyboardist Bobby Capps. Meanwhile under contract with Charisma, the album Bone Against Steel was released in 1991 , which received little attention. The following years, Special toured 38 without releasing a new album. It wasn't until 1997 that CBH released the comeback album Resolution , which was not very successful.
Since the late 1990s, 38 Special released two studio albums and one live album, but they received little attention and focused on performing live. In 2007 the band supported Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr.'s Rowdy Frynds tour . On September 27, 2008, they performed as part of a CMT Crossroads Special with country singer Trace Adkins . In 2009, 38 Special opened for REO Speedwagon and Styx as part of the Can't Stop Rockin 'Tour . In 2010 the live album Live From Texas was released . The group continues to perform. In the fall of 2012, 38 Special was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame .
