Jim Peterik (born November 11, 1950 in Berwyn , Illinois ) is an American songwriter and rock musician . As a member of the rock band Survivor , he co-wrote the Oscar and Golden Globe Award nominated hit single Eye of the Tiger with Frankie Sullivan .

Life

Peterik founded his first band with some classmates at the age of 13. At one of their appearances he was approached by Larry Millas whether he would like to join his band. Under the name The Shondels , they later recorded a first single for Epitone Records . Peterik had meanwhile finished school and was studying at the University of Illinois . In 1964 the band was renamed The Ides of March and received a record deal. Two years later they achieved their first chart positions with their singles "You Wouldn't Listen" and "Roller Coaster". They then moved to Warner Bros. , where they achieved their greatest chart success with "Vehicle" in 1970, when the single rose to position two on the Billboard Hot 100 .

The band broke up and in the next few years Peterik tried his hand at being a solo artist and released his first solo album in 1976 with "Don't Fight the Feeling". For his doctorate he toured in the opening act for Heart and Boston, among others . In 1978 he founded the rock band Survivor with Frankie Sullivan and David Bicker . With a record deal with Scotti Brothers , they had a few small chart hits in the following years with “Somewhere in America”, “Poor Man's Son” and “Summer Nights”. The band's breakthrough came in the summer of 1982 after Sylvester Stallone hired the band to contribute the title track for his feature film Rocky III - The Tiger's Eye . "Eye of the Tiger" stayed at the top of the Billboard charts for six weeks and was awarded double platinum and Grammy awards. The composers Peterik and Sullivan received an Oscar nomination. The album of the same name then rose to position two on the album charts. The 1984 album "Vital Signs" also contained two top ten hits and in 1985 Stallone commissioned the band again for the title track to Rocky IV - The Fight of the Century . The track " Burning Heart ", co-composed by Peterik , reached position two on the Billboard charts. In 1988 Peterik left the band.

In 1990 The Ides of March reunited with the original line-up, and the band released new albums in 1992 and 1997. In 2003 Peterik founded the band Pride of Lions with Toby Hitchcock and released a second solo album in 2006. In addition to his work as a multi-instrumentalist, Peterik also works as a songwriter for other artists. He has written for bands like the Doobie Brothers , Cheap Trick , Lynyrd Skynyrd and REO Speedwagon , among others .
