Rocky IV is an American boxer film from 1985 and the fourth installment in the Rocky feature film series . Sylvester Stallone wrote the script, directed and also played the lead role.

After his friend and former opponent, the boxer Apollo Creed, is fatally injured by the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago during an exhibition match, Rocky Balboa seeks revenge and embarks on a rematch in Moscow . In order to compete with Ivan Drago, he retires to a wooden hut in Siberia and trains in the icy wilderness.

action

Rocky Balboa is world boxing champion again after winning his title fight and enjoys his popularity and wealth. Rocky, his family, and Rocky's friend and ex-opponent Apollo Creed celebrate the birthday of Rocky's brother-in-law, Paulie.

But then a Soviet delegation turns up in the USA with the Russian boxer Ivan Drago to take part in an exhibition match against the world champion, because "a victory over the world champion of the USA is a good thing for the Soviet Union". Drago, a silent giant with a body length of over 2 m, is a muscle-packed "fighting machine". Nicoli Koloff, the head of the delegation, demonstrates in a test that Drago's fist smashes everything that hits it.

Rocky agrees to the fight, but is then persuaded by Apollo Creed that he will fight the exhibition fight instead of Rocky. For one thing, Rocky owes him a favor since Creed trained him for the rematch against Clubber Lang. As an “aging star”, Creed would also like to enjoy the feeling of being in the boxing ring again. Rocky gives in despite his concerns. But the exhibition fight ends fatally for Creed, because he has no chance against Drago's strength: After several heavy hits on the head, Creed goes down and dies in the ring. Drago laconically comments on his death with "If he's dead, he's dead!" Rocky gives the eulogy at Creed's funeral.

Rocky wants to avenge Creed and beyond that to show the world and himself that Drago is not invincible. That is why he agrees to start another boxing match, although this should take place in Moscow and according to the conditions of the Russians. Supervised by Duke, he undergoes extensive training in a mountain hut in the snow-covered mountains of Russia, while Drago is trained and doped using the latest methods .

On the day of the fight, Rocky Balboa hits a wave of hatred in the sold out arena. But the mood changes with every round that Rocky goes through, and with every further hit he lands on Drago. A tough fight ensues in which both boxers fight to the point of complete self-surrender and at full risk. In the second round Rocky manages to impress his opponent with hard hits, even in the sixth and eighth round he can hit Drago hard. All other of the first nine laps are clearly to his disadvantage, and most of the time he can hardly save himself into the break. From the tenth round, the fight is even. After the fourteenth round, Drago, who was marked by hard blows, is insulted by Koloff and asked to win, whereupon Drago Koloff pushes out of the ring and yells that he is fighting for himself to win. In the fifteenth and final round, Rocky actually does it: he defeats the Russian fighter with a knockout and wins the hearts of the Russian spectators, who cheer him and celebrate him as the winner.

Reviews

“Fourth part of the boxer saga, which naively tries to build a sporty bridge between East and West, but with its rumbling chauvinism and infantile Russia clichés only seems ridiculous. Insightful as a commentary on the newly awakened US self-awareness and sense of mission under the Reagan government in the mid-1980s. "

“That could have been a really funny Communist eater comic, but Stallone has a serious concern about the beer table ... after the jubilant Russians have changed fronts in the Moscow arena, he comes to them with relaxation : It is better for two men to fight in the ring than that 20 million would kill each other. Not worth mentioning if 'Rocky IV', which has its mass start with us this week, was not on the way to becoming the most successful film in cinema history - after box office. "
