Jackson Hole is a valley in Wyoming , United States . It lies in the Rocky Mountains and is bounded by the Teton Range to the west and the Gros Ventre Range to the south and east. In the north the Gros Ventre Range merges into the Absaroka Range . The upper reaches of the Snake River runs through the valley .

The valley originated 13-9 million years ago in the development of the Basin and Range Province by the Teton- rejection in north-south direction. The crustal block was tipped up on the western side of the fracture; it forms today's Teton Range with its steep eastern and gentle western flanks. The eastern part of the crustal block, however, sagged and now forms the valley of Jackson Hole. The difference in altitude between the raised peaks and the valley floor was originally around 10,000 to 11,000 meters . The erosion reduced the height of the Teton Range. The removed material partially backfilled Jackson Hole. Today there are 2100 m between the summit of Grand Teton and the valley floor.

Indians used the valley for hunting and for ceremonial purposes, from around 1870 it was populated by whites and inhabited all year round. The valley is named after David E. Jackson , a trapper and fur trader who hunted beavers and other fur animals in the area for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company in the early nineteenth century . The name hole (English for hole) gave it trappers who entered the valley, mainly coming from the north and west, had to descend a relatively steep slope.

The valley lies largely in the Grand Teton National Park , located in the south, the National Elk Refuge , in the thousands of Wapiti -Hirsche draw for the winter. In the southeast lies the city of Jackson , which lives from tourism and has a reputation for having preserved the traditional cowboy way of life. There are also several ski areas here .

The valley is accessed in a north-south direction by the bundled US Highways 26 , 89 and 191 . In the southwest, the small Wyoming State Route 22 leads over the Teton Range out of the valley. In the north, US Highway 287 provides access to the prairies in the west.

Jackson Hole Airport is northeast of Jackson in Grand Teton National Park . It is the only civil airport located in a US national park and also the airport with the highest number of passengers in Wyoming.
